Passport Pictures for Free?

I need to get some passport pictures done.

Is there any way of doing them for free?

yes, commit crime, get arrested, mugshot by police. = free

    • ^This…

      And say cheeze.

      • Smiling isn't acceptable for a passport photo.

But probably OK for a mugshot.

    • Good for obtaining passport, terrible for obtaining visas…

You can take them yourself, just the effort to make sure you have the right lighting, they're cropped to the right size and they're printed properly is painful.

      ^This…

      And DON'T smile.

      • and don't wear your glasses, face straight on, right type of background - the list is quite long and stringent.

      • i dunno if this is strict?
my 2012 passport has me faintly smiling just so i don't look like a zombie. It doesn't impact any other part of my face.

but recently my family was renewing theirs and were instructed by the post office (not passport officials) to not smile at all in the photo

          Why so serious?

I did the whole family successfully by myself. Read the terms, took the photos, edited to size in Photoshop and printed. The guy at the Aus post was dismissive after I told him I did it. After putting all my photos through measurement tests and assessments he sighed and had to accept them. Victory!

        • +2

          @Dozingquinn: nicely done!

Haha yeah dismissive at the $18 he didn't get to cop from ya

    Try this site. https://www.idphoto4you.com/

Not free, because you still need to get them printed for $0.20. Need a little know-how to get it right.

You can't afford to travel, stay home.

    • +2

Yup pretty much it’s like $10 for passport photos

      • Where? I normally just use the post office since they're "meant" to know the requirements.

        • Yeah where are they $10? $15-$18 per person, or 10c per person with a bit of effort and a trip to Officeworks

          Adds up for a family

By the way, chemists seem to also have the passport photo assessment software so you don't have to go post office

      • +14

Wouldn't the true discount be staying at home then while exploring through Google Maps?

        • Lol couldn’t help but laugh 😂

        • exploring through Google Maps is to travel as masturbation is to sex.

There is no free lunch for passport photos, once you got your photos, you need to validate via Australia Post with a appointment, they will check again and rejection rate is pretty high. If you have plenty of time to waste, then go for it.
Sometimes they even reject the pics that you get via Officeworks, but you can at least get your money back.

    • +5

Best to pay the $10 and get them down at the post office. That way they won't reject their own photos and saves you a lot of time!

      • +1

That is what we did - get both done at the same time and that way you know they are valid. Our biggest problem was ensuring our signatures did not go outside the box on their form; they were really fussy that the signature couldn't touch the edges.

      • +1

Our Post Office charges $17.50 for the photos

      • +1

its $18 now at least in south east melbourne suburbs

      • +2

Fark…. You guys are right, the cost has gone up since last time I did it!

        https://auspost.com.au/id-and-document-services/passports/pa…

It costs $16.95 for a set of high-resolution full colour photographs, printed on quality gloss paper, or $19.95 for a printed set and an emailed digital copy.

    • This.

It sucks but they do have a monopoly on it.

Just get it done at AusPost. It’s so much easier. Their software also pretty much guarantees you don’t need to go back and redo the photos and the get referees to resign the photo.

    • I am frequently getting high risk licences which are prossesed through AusPost store fronts.
To date the rejection rate on passport phots has been around 70 - 80%.
The kicker, every time the images supplied were purchased from another AusPost outlet.
Now Aus post photos have their logo and a exp date printed on the group of images which solves the above issue

  • You may as well get them taken at the Australia Post office where you submit the passport application.

As the poster above said, they have a high rejection rate. Even of professional passport photos. Sometimes they even reject the passport photo their colleague a few metres to the left took!

  • +2

I recommend paying for them at Australia Post. The staff know how to get the photos right and will likely save you hassle and money later on with the lodging of your passport application.

  • Thankyou for your genuine advice 😘

    • Guidelines are here

You can take them yourself but you DO need to print them. Unless ya have photo paper and printer at home it'll cost you at least 20c!

I have done this before, you just have to be very detail conscious.

      • +1

        This +
We've always print at Kmart and never had any of the photos being rejected as long as you follow the guidelines correctly.
In the beginning I would have couple files with slightly different sizes to be printed because the print result was a bit different from what we expected.
But now you can use some websites to upload the pictures get the correct sizes.

I've probably done this for more than 7 times for myself, wife, kids and couple friends.
Taking the kids picture when they are only few months old were the challenging ones since you have to take it vertically when they are laying flat.

    Don't forget your burqa.

When I get my passport photos done I'm tempted to get good and drunk the night before so I can simulate what it looks like to step off a plane after having spent 26 hours travelling from Melbourne to some place in Europe in Economy class.

  • Unfortunately Auspost have a virtual monopoly on passport photos, unless you submit the application yourself at the passport office with the attendant risk of being knocked back. It's a money spinner for Auspost but is it worth your while fighting it? How come you can afford a passport ($282 now) but won't stump up a bit more for the photos?

    • +1

there is no monopoly of the photos by aus post, you can supply you OWN photos when you submit your application at the post office.

      • Yes, but they knock you back with excuse after excuse. This is both my experience and that of others I've talked to. If you persist they might give in.

    • Yeah I found Auspost was very picky if I BYO photos but everyone was good first go if I got them taken there.

are you the type to eat instant noodles while on holidays too?

  • Is the OP going to ask for free flights and free accomodation next?

    • +1

      I've a few headphones that need delivering…

      • and I know a girl called Cassie…

  • Amazing how offended members are over a fellow member asking if there is a way to achieve their objective at zero cost.
Surely all the haters are not having that much of a rough day at work today that they feel it’s OK to ridicule another member for asking a question.
    Get some perspective.

  • +3

Are you using this for a Passport? Then probably not worth the effort.
It is just for an ID, concession card, or some thing else wehre they request a Passport photo.
Use a free Passport photo app. Crop save as JPG open up indesign/photoshop. Make a 5x7 document, paste your face on the doc and print it out at KMART for $1

    • This. OP didn't say if it was for a passport application. For other IDs, it's fairly easy to take it yourself, replicate 8 to a 4x6 print and print one for small change.

      • OP didn't say if it was for a passport application.

Why'd they call it a passport photo then? (Possibly because they though we'd be too thick to understand ID photo.)

        • Passport size photo is commonly abbreviated to passport photo. OP may not be aware of the stringent requirements for passport and that it's much less for other IDs. Which is why the post sounded odd, wanting to save a few bucks on top of $282.

        • @greenpossum: So OP can't figure out how to get his selfie printed then?

        • @D C: Well as you know hydrogen and ignorance are the most common elements in the universe.

        • @greenpossum: True, and there is a large quantity of the latter on OzBargain.

    • +1

You don't even need any software. https://makepassportphoto.com/services.php

  • if go to an event that has a photo booth e.g. birthday party, then take a few there

    • Definitely. I mean, what could the error rate possibly be?

  • +1

You're absolutely delusional if you think you could get it for free. Don't think there are any charities out there that are willing to help you financially on your holiday trip. You can get it for very cheap though.

I've just done one for my dad last week, and auspost accepted it. Take a picture with the best camera you have, be sure it follows all the guidelines. General rule is make sure the subject is looking dead on at the camera, with both ears showing. Make sure the lighting is fine, no shadows casting on the subject, decent light so the details show etc

Google up one of those free online passport photo id tool, they help to crop out the exact size needed.

Have it printed at officeworks for 10c each.

It took me about an hour to edit the photo and have it printed. To be honest, I would've rather paid. Way too much effort to save $15 bucks. Next time I would only be willing if there are a few photos that need to be taken.

  • Here FREE

  • Hate the bloody post office. Just flat out refused to take a photo of me wearing glasses. They're not hipster ones with thick lenses either. Customer service was awful. Now I have to take my glasses off every time I go through the smart gate.

    • It’s always like that. I think it’s the passport rules, not Aus post rules. I’m in the same boat, can’t see half a metre without my (prescription, real) glasses and I have to take them off for the gate when needed. NBD.

      • If you read the guidelines you are able to. I have previously.

  • Your passport cost $282. Passport photos at Australia Post only another $16.95
So still under $300 and you get 4 spares to take with you.
There are your free passport photos. THANK YOU!

But in the big scheme of things passport photos add very liitle to the overall cost so just get them done (right the first time) at the local post office and save youself a HUGE HASSLE - It isnt worth it!

  • If you're doing them for 2+ makes it a bit more worth it as it takes time to get it right to DIY. Invest at least 1hr of your life, taking a few photos in the right light, editing and checking then, going to officeworks/bigw/kmart/harvey norman to print out, cutting. Actual money spent - maybe 0.10-0.25 per photo which if you edit correctly should get you 8 individual photos on each is it a 4-6" standard?

At $17-$20 per person, you can save $40+

If just you then it depends on the person.

Aust post are very very annoying when it comes to DIY passport photos, especially depending on how entitled the shop person is feeling on the day. I once got knocked back picking up mail because the post man decided to send it to another post office instead of the usual and on the mail there was a in my middle name, missing one of the double letter. My ID presented did not have the address despite everything else matching up but one double letter. Bunch of such very nice people they are.

Re passport photos I do them myself, twice have gotten through in the last few years but beware it's not easy to do it from sratch and just 'wingin it'. Try some of the software around for free and she'll be right. Aust post staff are just too picky which I found so very strange considering they don't even do the actual approving - that's for the passport office. After a bit of back and forth the lady accepted that I wanted to take the risk with one particular photo for the older child - for some reason there was too much contrast and freckles on the face showed too much!!! Wow I should've just photoshopped them out?

Passport office accepted no problems at all.

Just allow an extra week in case something comes up so you don't pay expedited fees if you need to travel within say 30 days.

  • If you can't afford passport photos, you can't afford to travel.
