What Is The Best ADSL 2+ Deal Right Now?

Hi, I would like to seek advice regarding the current best internet deal in the market.

I am moving in June to an area (Brisbane Southside) that NBN is not yet available. Hence I am looking for an ADSL 2+ service that comes with Wifi Modem. I hope that the provider will provide the free upgrade when the NBN is ready in that area. A quick search through the websites, I feel that the providers are pretty much giving the same service deal. I am not sure which is the best to go with.

Based on the above situation, what would be your suggestions?

  • check your usage, see if mobile data is viable option
check your address, see how far is the exchange to your house
check the nbn rollout date, see when it's going to be available

    • Mobile data may not be viable because my girlfriend sometimes comes to the house to use the internet.

The exchange is very near, 500m away.

NBN is only available Jan - March 2019

  • Is Telstra Cable available? You might not need to go to ADSL.

    • Yes, it is available but it seems more expensive?

Cable is always more expensive than ADSL because there is very little competition in the cable net market. Its either Optus or Telstra, offering plans with their own special perks (foxtel bundle, phone bundle, entertainment packages and speed boost)

ADSL2 as such almost has 'perfect' competition, with all the sellers offering basically the same product because there is no choice in what speed you get (it's dictated by phone cable length and signal attenuation)… so there is very little differentiation. The only thing that matters is

        1. The contract lengths. Many offer a 12mth / 24 mth contgract, but many are no contract and are month-by-month — This is the best. I would avoid contracts as much as possible. But there is a tradeoff, because typically providers that offer no-contract plans do not give you a free modem and they also charge a setup fee.

        2. possible landline call inclusions. Most require you to pay a line rental which is normal, and are mostly PAYG billing for phone calls. If you do not care about landlines and never use it, just roll with a PAYG option.

        3. Monthly cost, plus dl quotas and peak / offpeak restrictions. The norm nowadays is $60 to $70 dollars for a unlimited package.

        • Thank you for such comprehensive explanation.

Up to 115/5 on Telstra Cable is far, far superior to ADSL. ADSL will be lucky to achieve 20mbps down and 1mbps up. If you're going to HFC NBN then at least your house will be wired for HFC already with Telstra Cable.
