Which type of Gin for a present?

I have a 50th birthday coming up soon, and the birthday boy happens to like Gin over other drinks.

Since I don't drink Gin much (actually, not at all), I'm not too sure what makes a decent gift. I don't want to buy a bottle that's cheap or for everyday use. Hopefully there's a few OzBargainers who can give me some advice.

I've had a browse on the internet, and Bombay Sapphire and Gordon's keep popping up, but not sure if they're the equivalent of Johnnie Walker Red/Gold. I'm looking to spend between $50-$100 on a bottle.

I remember there was some good advice given in regards to whiskeys a couple of months back (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/35992), is there any similar advice for Gin?

  • Johnnie Walker Red/Gold are whiskies and can't be compared with gin so the question of equivalence does not come into play.

Both Bombay Sapphire and Gordon's are good gins - I would rate Bombay Sapphire above Gordons. You have a pretty generous budget as you could get a bottle of either for around $40-50 - good gin is significantly cheaper that good whiskey!! I am sure a bottle of either would be appreciated by the recipeient.

  • You could try Tanqueray No 10 which is the premium version of Tanqueray. I've never had it myself, but I do like Tanqueray - to me it's smoother than Bombay Sapphire, but has less interesting flavour so it all comes down to taste!

  • +1

To be honest, i'd go to their house, and when hes in the bathroom run and see what they've got in the celler (or ask wife). That way you cant go wrong…

  • Bombay Sapphire is about $50 normally, I got 2 for $70 or $80 recently somewhere or other. I am pretty sure it was a Liquorland deal where you could choose that or JW Black (the JW red deal is cheaper, 2 for $60).

Gordons is cheapish brand. I'd say Bombay or Tanqueray is a "nice gift", wouldn't appear cheap or nasty. But you really are at the lower end of "drinkable straight" at this $50-60 price point.

I don't drink any liquor straight, so I don't really care - I tend to choose more on the hangover-quotient vs piss-value (% alcohol per litre per dollar). Eg: Flavoured Masala has excellent piss-value but a poor hangover quotient. :-D

  • Thanks for the advice, gents…I did have a look into Tanqueray NO. 10, that seems to be the way to go.

Davo, I've already scouted out the cellar. and there's a couple of bottles of Bombay Sapphire in there. Hence I don't want to go down that path.

Any experience with Martin Millers? According to this website, it's the 'best gin in the world' http://www.thedrinkshop.com/products/nlpdetail.php?prodid=18…

comparable to Tanqueray 10 are Hendrick's and Plymouth

similar to Martin Millers in quality is Cadenhead's

then there are the French such as G Vine and Citadelle

    • Awesome site! There happens to be a store in my neighbourhood as well, so I'm going to to in tomorrow to check it out.

Thanks for all the input guys, at this stage I think I'll go with Tanqueray No. 10, seems like a classy present. Nick's seem to stock several other unheard of brands, so might be a good reference for future gifts/occasions.

        no worries

Nick’s seem to stock several other unheard of brands

unheard of to you but not a gin connoisseur :)
