PSA: 13-Inch MacBook Pro (Non Touch Bar) (October 2016 to October 2017) *Expanding* Battery Replacement Program @ Apple

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Posting this based on the prior iPhone Battery Replacement post and as a matter of safety. Apple say it isn't a "safety issue" but expanding battery seems concerning eitherway.

Just announced:

Apple has determined that, in a limited number of 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units, a component may fail causing the built-in battery to expand. This is not a safety issue and Apple will replace eligible batteries, free of charge. Affected units were manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017 and eligibility is determined by the product serial number.

  • Gotta love Apple's free of charge replacement.

    • Gotta love Apple's QA process these days :P

      • I was gonna make fun of that as someone who has never owned an apple product, but I instantly am reminded of douche bag companies who refuse to offer help when wanting to replace phone batteries in the warranty period.

    • What exactly is amazing about a manufacturer doing a soft-recall and replacing faulty parts within 1-2 years of purchase?

      • because other companies don't go to the lengths apple does

ok mine is eligible. maybe i should wait another 2 years, get it replaced before the 5 years coverage expire. to make most of it

    • That's a really good idea, because it'll be like having a semi-new laptop. Battery makes all the difference.

  • Damn i was hoping for a new battery :-(

The serial number you entered is not eligible under this program because either:
    - It's not in the affected serial number range.
    - Our records show that your battery has already been replaced.
    - Our records show it's no longer eligible for a free replacement under this program.

  • My ten which I broden’ed are all eligible

my 2011 MacBook Pro battery just did that a week ago. The battery expanded and nearly broke the casing. Thankfully it didn't explode on me. Never had such experience with any other devices before. Scary situation to be in.

Take that to apple. they might replace it for free

Thank mate but don't think Apple would cover for a 7 year old laptop. But have to give credit to Apple for replacing the display for free when the outside cover came unglued for no reason about 2 years ago.
