Do You Think ZTE Will Be around to Honour My Warranty till It Expires in 18 Months?

Recently ZTE has been banned from importing parts from US companies for 7 years. This includes processors from Intel and Qualcomm and may extend to the Android OS. The only reason they aren't banned from using it right now is that Google don't actually sell android in the strictest sense.

Last night I dropped my Axon 7 and the screen wouldn't turn on. Highly technical idiot/savant that I am, I fixed it by dropping it again.

Before that though, I googled the warranty process and that's when I heard about these trade bans.

Just curious, do you think ZTE will survive this? I love my phone (running third party ROM, the stock rom was pretty good but yeah.. didn't really trust them BEFORE this)

Is there anyone else around making half decent SoCs? I doubt Samsung would sell there xynos chips to ZTE.. and even less likely I would buy a MediaTek or allwinner/amlogic or rockchip device

    US is different to AU

    • If ZTE can't buy the parts they need from the States then it affects everyone who might buy a phone from them in the future?

      • From what I've read their main US parts are Qualcomm processors and Android. They almost certainly make all their own screens, motherboards, bodies and other components but there isn't really much competition against Qualcomm in the low/medium end Android processors.

As for Android, there isn't really a way to get a mid range phone to market in the West that doesn't have the google ecosystem successfully. In China, its different as they're used to not having Google, and have their own app stores and solution, so Android without Google isn't as big of a deal.

I really hope ZTE can get this fixed, they provide a nice selection of white label phones for telecos as well as a good option for budget consumers. It'll be a shame to see them go.

  • Yeah, they'll just source parts from Non-US sources.
Mediatek power the vast majority of Low End Devices and ZTE are a major player in Low End devices.
So nothing will change for them in that space.
It's just the High End space that will be a problem.

Maybe this is the point in time that Mediatek come out of the cold and release kernel sources like they're supposed to. That is the only major issue stopping Custom ROM's on Mediatek devices.
Maybe ZTE buy out a Rockchip or Allwinner and start making in-house High End parts like Huawei
And we have seen Exynos SoC's on non Samsung devices, so that's not totally out of the question.

    • Is there a correlation between mediatek socs run with release of kernel sources? Surely not releasing kernel sources doesn't have an impact on how well socs perform right?

      • Correct there is no, or at least pretty minimal correlation between SoC performance and Kernel source code.
It's more about Custom Rom development.

Some Mediatek chips are decent performers in the mid-range space at least.

  • SO why are they banned?

They sold phones into Iran and Afghanistan (?) against export bans.
In hindsight now knowing the penalty, it was a pretty dumbass thing to do.
Sell a few extra handsets at the expense of losing access to High End parts that would have sold in the millions in future sales.

Lols, they should have sold them to the CIA first, silly people, you can't skip the middleman like that. :)

      • Yeah, Iran and North Korea. The funny thing is, if they sold devices that didn't have US parts in them (which was likely Qualcomm processors and Android), literally no one would care. China has been trading with NK for ages, but it's all their home brands that use parts from China.

It's stupid that the US has that much power over the fourth largest handset manufacturer, and can kill them in one swift move.

  • On the plus side, it might become a collectible ;)

I have a Axon 7 as well, a similar thing happened to me where exactly half the screen (vertically) was greyed out. After reading some online forums, the internal connector between the screen and the motherboard can get loose. You can "re-attach" it by pressing the phone close to the end of the screen near the top volume button.

ZTE is basically on halt for now (its stock trading on the Hong Kong stock exchange was suspended last month)

  • Wow!
It impacts their use of Android too?
I didn't expect that Software would be included.
