Unusual Encounter with Energy Provider

I signed up to take advantage of Red Energy’s 10k qantas points.
However one day later, I received a better deal from current company and called Red Energy to cancel.

When I spoke to the rep he said my application “failed” based on a credit check.

I was shocked. I’ve been paying bills for a decade.

Anyway. He called back 30 seconds later saying it wasn’t a bad credit check but my application was closed because thy needed more info and because I didn’t provide it It was closed.

I was bemused as how could they close my application in 20 hours without asking me for any additional documents.

He kind of mumbled and said something like “you’re not gonna be a customer why does it matter?”

I then proceeded to tell him I am interested in being a customer and he needed to find out what when wrong. He said it was late and he’s get back to me.

I’m concerned that a) it was a bad credit check and he’s just covering himself as he wasn’t able to say that and screwed up by telling me this

Or b) there was some kind of error

Either way I think I have a right to know.
Thoughts on this and how I should proceed?

Utility companies cannot refuse service based on credit history, if they could refuse service then anyone who has gone bankrupt wouldnt be able to get electrcity or any other essential service. What he said makes no sense, i would ask to speak to a supervisor.

this should be called paranoid bargain.

  • Why do they do a credit check in the first place?

  • Request your own free credit score to see if there is anything worth worrying?
