Linux build

I currently run Xubuntu on a HP 8200 SFF Elite. With 12gb ram and a Nvidia GT 710 1GB. It has two (120gb) SSDs, 7tb of HDDs and two monitors. Excluding the drives I managed to get this for about $100 total. I will be reusing all this additional hardware on the new machine, with the exception of the ram.

I am planning on building something newer. I play Civ 5 and FM18 (I will be hitting Civ 6 when it reduces in price and but FM every year). Currently the i5 2500 and the GPU handle this fine. Otherwise, it serves as a plex server for my home (max two simultaneous streams) and file server for our photos. Usually, lifhtweight stuff like resilio-sync and rclone. I do not plan on overclocking the CPU. Ram is not a problem and 16gb is possibly too much… But I'd like to future-proof it and aim for it to last 6+ years.

I'd like a heads up if there is anything I have missed… This will be my first full build. Any comments or improvements are also very much welcome.

Maybe also consider something like an Intel NUC if you want power efficiency, since I assume the system is on 24/7.

    • It's probably on 11 hours per day. I was concerned the NUCs wouldn't game well.. can you add a gpu?

The latest Skull Canyon has Vega Graphics, albeit pricey, other Intel NUCs just have integrated graphics. Not too sure if the newer models will support eGPU. I've found the Intel integrated graphics to be quite capable these days, I'd advise checking the performance statistics for each title you're interested in though, just in case. Do also note, NUCs are barebones, so you'll need to supply the RAM and Storage medium.

Get a Dell Optiplex 9020 with i7-4770 during eBay sales. Linux is well supported. It would be faster than i5-7500 and cheaper too. Unfortunately it also usually comes with unneeded Windows license. Then add a GTX 1050 or 1050 ti low profile card.

    • I bought the Optiplex 9020 i7 4770 and did alot of research on it afterwards

The 1050ti will does NOT fit in to the PCIE 3.0 x16 slot but will fit into the PCIe 2.0 x4 slot which alot of us here haven't mentioned before.

Meaning you will not be using the 1050ti to its full potential. There is a big difference between PCIe 3.0 @ x16 vs PCIe 2.0 @ x4, the FPS difference ranges from 5-20fps depending on the game.

I ended up buying another SFF which was the HP Elite G1 800 and that will fit the 1050ti in the PCIE 3.0 x16 slot. The HP Elite is a little bit bigger than the dell Optiplex 9020. The HP elite also has better airflow since its bigger and can fit 3xHDD compared to 1xHDD in the optiplex.
