Base app is only good for within network (LAN) remote desktop.
Haven’t used this for a few years, but the thing I didn’t like was having to have the Splashtop server running all the time on the desktop machine. I don’t know much about the protocols involved, maybe all apps of this type require a server running in the background?

I have experience with all 3 items. They are just as good. PainToad is correct. They all require a server running in the background and they are free to download. It is free so just grab it - Ozbargain attitude.
The 'background' server simply negotiates the connection.

How does this compare to Teamviewer, that is free for non-commercial use, or just VNC which is open source?
