PlayTV2 - Worth the wait?

I will soon need a new PVR as my old one is slowly dying on me, and I recently bought a ps3 to find that you could buy Playtv which integrates itself. This is fantastic :)

With PlayTV being a steal at $60 odd on dvd.co.uk im tossing up whether to buy the old one now or wait for the new one. Upon reading around, PlayTV2 was meant to be released late last year, but looking at the added features, it doesnt look like much of an upgrade.

Most articles suggest that Freeview HD playback and recording will be supported as well as facebook integration.
Im not sure how relevant Freeview HD is to me (I dont know much about TV's) but i certainly dont want something else flooding my facebook with useless junk.

In your opinion, should I grab one now, or wait for the new one?

Also if someone could give me a quick lowdown on this freeview business that would be lovely (:

  • Freeview means can not skip ads. No PS3 so nothing else relevant - soz.

  • erm… the last playtv software update IIRC allows recording of any free to air digital channel including the "freeview" HD channels, and you can "BUY" the facebook integration addon too, which is clearly a waste of money. Ignore the whole "freeview" marketing crap, basically the current playtv with latest software does everything you'd need it to. It's always recorded HD.

Not much to record on summer programming right now, but I did use my playtv a lot recording house, grand designs, amazing race and other things which i wanted to timeshift - lots of great music stuff on ABC2 from triple J. For $60 just go buy it, I paid more than double that when it was released into aus.

oh yeah, go buy the biggest hard drive you can stuff in the ps3 if you get a playtv as well.

    • Hehe I might just do that :P
How goes transferring files from PS3 to PC, I have a gigabit connection, so it should copy at like 125mb/s~ to my PC which has 4tb

I'd much rather stack my case with cheaper HD's :)

      • I just stuck a 500 gig 7200 rpm drive into my brother's ps3. The process is super simple and is even documented in the PS3 manual. Alternatively, look at the two links below. The first gives lots of info about the playtv itself, the second details the process (with links to files required) for changing the hard drive.

Copying shows off is not all that useful due to PS3s using FAT32 formatted USB drives, restricting the file sizes. It won't (to my knowledge) let you transfer files off over a network connection.

        • Ah damn that sucks :/
If I leave the country blank, I miss out on SBS, but I can copy off files <4gb hmm

TBH I dont plan on doing that much recording anyway

Ah well, you cant have the cake and eat it too :P

        • +1

I realize this is fairly late but all info must be good right?

So first off yeah just get playtv now I'd say, totally worth it. And get the bigger HDD for the ps3, it's heaps convenient. Afaik you can't transfer files off the ps3 over the network (but we may soon be able to with the ps3 master key releases, yay!) but you can set you region to AU, record some TV and then later change to a different region to copy files onto USB storage. Changing region doesn't affect your recording collection but you do have to do a full channel scan each time.

Copying HD stuff off sucks though, seeing as you're limited to 4Gb with fat32 and HD recordings are generally ~5Gb an hour. You can record stuff in many parts but that's pretty cumbersome.

        • Yeah thanks for the tip man :)

I ordered mine a week or 2 ago, expecting it soon :D

  • yes, i think you can “BUY” the facebook integration addon too,and wait the old one.
