Intra-Europe Flights

Hi all,

Traveling to Europe in July/August and require some intra-Europe flights i.e. Amsterdam to Belgrade/Belgrade to Florence/Prague to Berlin..

I've been using SkyScanner and Google Flights as my resource for pricing but wondering if there is something else that is good for this sort of thing.

Any advice is appreciated! Cheers.

  • any reason why you prefer flying?

You're probably better off catching trains for most of your destinations.

The Czechia rail system is much slower than your other destinations, however you will definitely save money over flying.

Plug some destinations in and have a look at all the info this guy has put together.

Prague to Berlin, 4:20 hours on the train, no stops, 24.40 euro if you book early.

    • Best site

    • My goodness what a great website…thank you!

  • +1 on trains for travelling in Europe. Look into the travel passes if you are going to do a bit of travelling around. Much more comfortable and you leave/arrive in the middle of towns rather than dicking around with getting too and from airports, checking in, waiting for checked luggage etc.

access to airports in Europe are often too expensive.

    • and flight delays :(

Hire a car for the whole duration you’re in Europe for.

  • Thank you all kindly for your suggestions.

I'm in Europe for 5 weeks and my travel plan is not geographically cohesive and unfortunately this can't be changed.

I'm not sure rail will work for me for a lot of destinations.

For example a train from Belgrade to Siena will take 22 hours and I lose an entire day, Amsterdam to Belgrade is over 24 hours.

Prague to Berlin would work quite well so happy to do that. I am also going to Copenhagen from Berlin and thats an 8 hour journey but it could theoretically work if there are overnight trains.

This is the reason why I am mostly relying on air travel.

For reference my rough route is Amsterdam -> Belgrade -> Siena -> Prague ->
    Berlin -> Copenhagen -> Zurich.

  • Your choices will be restricted by the budget airlines that fly point to point between your cities. Look at the list of airlines that use airport A as a hub and see if B is one of their destinations. Or the reverse, look at B as a hub and see if A is a feeder airport. This is a painstaking process though. In some cases, like Siena, you might not find a direct connection but have to use a nearby city.

    • Yep you're right, for Siena need to use Florence/Rome/Milan and I will choose the cheapest one for the dates.

  • Consider booking return trips (with the leg you will actually board as the first leg in the itinerary). I have found return trips within Europe are often cheaper than one way.

This is mostly true for full carriers, not budget airlines.

    • Does that work even if not returning to same place?

i.e. Amsterdam to Belgrade [first leg] -> Belgrade to Pisa [return flight]

      • That's not really a return, it's an open jaw. For budget airlines usually there are no return tickets, they are just 2 one-way tickets.

        • Right I see. I think I have mostly worked out where I NEED flights and other parts where I can maybe take an overnight bus/train.

Amsterdam to Belgrade is approx. $280-$300
Belgrade to Milan is approx. $250
Rome/Milan/ to Prague is approx. $130-$150
Prague to Cologne I'm still considering, might do a night train for about 100 EUR
Berlin to Copenhagen I haven't checked yet
Copenhagen to Zurich I haven't checked yet
