Thanks for the post…. got this and Wonders of the Solar System for GBP21.04

    • +1

Thanks for that one… I ordered the Wonders of the Solar System after reading that :)

  • VAT goes up to 20% Jan 4th (UK time).

I wonder if Amazon will increase their prices or absorb the extra 2.5%?

If they absorb the increase, ie prices stay the same, then in effect we get an extra 2.5% off when they remove VAT from non-uk customers.

    • +1

It's already Jan 4th in the UK

      • Just placed an order. They take off 20% off the listed price.

    • Seems the VAT is only removed for certain products … whenever I place a watch or pair of shoes (from Amazon UK) into my basket and attempt to move through the checkout, it doesn't remove the VAT.

Has anyone had the VAT removed from Non-DVD/Blu-ray purchases?

      • +1

Most items under 18 GBP do not include VAT. Whereas Australians can import up to $1000 worth of goods without paying GST, the UK limit is only about 18 GBP. Amazon gets around charging VAT by distributing goods under this value from the Channel Islands where VAT does not apply.

Also VAT, like GST doesn't apply to all purchases. Books (excluding e-books) are VAT exempt. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/forms-rates/rates/goods-services.…

  • Thank you. Also picked up Wonders of the solar system AUD$33.57 delivered which works out less than $17 each.

Let the Pommies focus on the Cricket … meanwhile on the Net we'll plunder their goodies minus their VAT! hahaha hehehe

The Harry Potter 6 movie boxset is also great value for $24.99 = $37.72AUD delivered. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Harry-Potter-Collection-Years-Blu-ra…

    • That's pretty much their regular price, their sale price is usually 18 pounds (AUD$31 delivered roughly). Probably cheaper with the VAT change. :)

I always use this site to see the best deals for Amazon UK and USA. http://uk.blu-ray.com/movies/deals.php?action=bestdeals&coun…

    • Good site, thanks. Has price history too.

  • Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 1 Blu Ray is also very cheap for 3 discs:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Terminator-Sarah-Connor-Chronicles-B…

Ordered this, and Wonders Of The Solar System together for $34.99 delivered.

  • Good deal.

Although these are DVDs, I just noticed they have dropped the price further on Prison Break.

  • wat do you guys do abt the region restrictions?

    • There are no restrictions for Blu-Ray - we are in the same Blu-Ray region as the UK, and we both use PAL, so their Blu-Ray discs play fine here. :)

NOTE - This is for Blu-Ray only! For DVD's, we are in a different region to the UK, so you will need a region-free DVD player if you import DVD's from Amazon UK.

(Yes that sounds kinda silly, different regions for Blu-Ray vs DVD's!)

  • +2

I wonder if this deal coincides with the Yogi Bear movie? :)

  • If you are after a region changing Blu Ray player, I believe the SONIQ $99 player from JB Hifi allows you to xhange regions for blu ray.
JB Website: http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/home%20theatre.htm $99 with free delivery.
Discussion about region changing for this player http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1603992

Most DVD players these days are multi region anyway but they may require a code to unlock them. Just use Google and enter your player model number and the words 'region free' and you should find a how-to.

  • trying to order wonders of solar system but total coming up as AUD $19.16??? and it says Items: GBP 8.33
    Postage & Packing: GBP 3.68

    Total before VAT: GBP 12.01
    VAT: GBP 0.00

    Order Total: GBP 12.01
    Payment Total: AUD 19.16

    is it correct???

    • Looks to be. My items that were 9.99 before VAT also converted to 8.33 after deducting VAT.

Note that with Amazon the shipping will also become (relatively) cheaper the more items you buy.

    • Yup looks correct to me. Amazon doesn't use the same conversion rate as if you check on xe.com (1GBP = 1.595AUD compared to about 1.547AUD on xe.com)… But paying in AUD will mean you don't get charged to convert the currency by your bank.

      • Thanks guys.. bought the wonders of solar system…i may be wrong but didnt think i would need yellowstone on blu ray.

      • How do you pay in AUD? I went all the way thru checkout and it only stated the GBP price?

        • I have an existing account with Australian address and it automatically converts it into AUD on the last screen.

        • +1

Amazon Currency Converter must be disabled.

Once you have the Amazon Currency Converter switched on, it will automatically give you the option to make future qualifying payments in your local currency. You can also turn the Amazon Currency Converter on or off at anytime through Your Account:

Click Your Account at the top of any page.
Click "View or change your Currency Converter settings" and sign in
Choose the "Yes, Turn Amazon Currency Convertor On" option.
          [/QUOTE]

      • Do people find it (financially) better to have Amazon/PayPal/etc. take care of the currency conversion compared to their banks?

        • +1

I've always just let Amazon convert for me but never really thought about the cost. I think in the end it works out about the same.

          My bank charges 2.95% conversion fee so… 2.95% of $18.62 = $0.55
          Compared to the $19.16 total Amazon cost… $19.16 - $18.62 = $0.54

        • +1

The thing to bear in mind is that some credit cards still apply a % fee to payments made to overseas companies EVEN if the transaction is conducted in AUD.

        • @Marlboro Man: I didn't know that. Cheers!

  • To make sure you are getting the best UK prices, compare Amazon UK with many other UK retailers here:

    http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/

A lot of the other UK stores charge £2.35 per item for delivery to Australia which may work out cheaper for a single item. There are lots of UK bargains to be had!

  • +2

Yep, I just bought 12 blu rays for about $120 delivered. Absolute bargain. JB can kiss my ass if they think I'm buying their Blu-Rays at super inflated prices!!!!!

    • +3

Jerry Harvey will not be happy with you! :)

      • +2

Gerry Harvey doesn't sell Bluray discs at any of his stores. But let's not let that get in the way of a little aussie-retail bashing!

        • +1

I know he doesn't, but he is part of a coalition of businesses that do.

At the end of the day, whether "31mop" paid $120 or $132 (inc. GST), he has paid less than half that he would at local stores.

This GST "issue" is just a smoke screen of convenience to hide that fact that many major retailers have been sleeping at the wheel when it comes to establishing a competitive online offering.

        • "This GST “issue” is just a smoke screen of convenience to hide that fact that many major retailers have been sleeping at the wheel when it comes to establishing a competitive online offering."

… that doesn't even make sense. Even if they did offer goods online, they would still be subject to GST unlike international sellers.

    • Gerry's certainly doing it tough with all those internet sales.

How dare you post such a good deal! I'm going to let Gerry and his coalition of the swilling know about this deal and this whole website. I am sure they will take this whole site down. Goodbye ozbargain!!

  • Could I just buy a blu-ray player for my computer and it will play all these?

    • Yes and no.

In addition to the blu-ray drive, you'll also need blu-ray player software. Windows doesn't support it natively.

      • Yes you can. To play blu-ray on pc You need to have:

        1) PC Blu-ray Drive. Usually comes bundled with limited cut down OEM version of blu-ray/dvd player software. EG stereo only audio out.

        2) DHCP compliant monitor to play blu-ray over digital connection. Otherwise use VGA or purchase ANYDVD HD if you monitor is older non HDCP to play dvd over digital connection.

      • The software should be bundled with the hardware (check before you buy). Also you need to make sure your computer is fast enough to play it.

BD-ROM, DVD-RW (combo) drives are pretty cheap - ~$65. But then, so are real Blu-ray players…

  • Is it worth getting the new special edition over the older standard edition?

Planet earth standard edition $26.16 delivered. (5 blu-ray)
Planet earth Special edition $39.68 delivered. (6 blu-ray)

    • I ended up getting the standard edition after reading posts from this thread:

      http://forum.blu-ray.com/united-kingdom/150020-planet-earth-…

"There is a serious mastering fault with at least four of the episodes, where the contrast/white level has been boosted to insane levels. Many of the shots of snowy landscapes are basically 1/3 nothing but white."

And from email replies (posted in the thread), 2entertain Ltd are not acknowledging any fault with it…

  • Ordered Yellowstone and Planet Earth. Cost about $45 delivered and was here in 6 days. AMAZING!
