Looking for a Smart Watch/Fitness tracker

Hi guys,

I am currently looking for a Smart watch or a fitness tracker to help keep notes and monitor my fitness activities and overall lifestyle. I have no idea about these and have done a bit of research although I still feel like I know nothing.

The key features I am looking for are as follows:

A really accurate heart rate monitor for general day to day activities, in the gym with weights and during cardio to keep my heart rate at a particular %s

I work construction and probably won't use it at work, but if I do a semi durable one would be nice

Sleep tracking

Able to be used in the pool (I don't swim often, but I'd like to be able to track heart rate when I do)

Android compatibility, Spotify integration

Bluetooth

At least a few days worth of charge

I am happy to spend the dollars for quality and something built to last. There seems to be so many different options I don't really know where to start. If there's anyone out there that has some idea about my situation I would love to hear from you.

Thanks in advance guys, much appreciated.

    I'm liking my Xiaomi AmazFit

    • Does Amazfit can wearable when swim?

      • Haven't tried, but it does have some water resistance.

        • Did you wear during bathing?

    • I had a look at the AmazFit and it reads up really well. I'm just concerned about its price, how can it be so good for so cheap compared to some others out there?

Have you had this for long? Has it been reliable?

      • Been great for 2 months so far.

  • If you want offline Spotify then Gear S3 is your only choice. If you’re willing to stream Spotify on the go, then you need an LTE watch which means an Apple Watch, Gear S3 or an LG (maybe some more). But none of these have more than 2 days battery, probably much less if you actually USE Spotify.

Depends on what you value the most.

    Style?
    Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.

    Support?
    Apple Watch Series 3.

    Circular AndroidWear?
    Huawei Watch (v1.0)

    Rectangle AndroidWear?
    ASUS Zenwatch 2

    Best Battery Life?
    Xiaomi Huami Amazfit Bip

    Best Fitness?
    Polar V800
    Garmin Vivoactive 3
    Fitbit Charge 2

    Best Sports Watch with smart-features?
    Garmin Forerunner 645 Music
    Polar A370
    Fitbit Ionic

….I've done some research on this topic.
    Some really good websites:

    https://www.wareable.com
    https://www.techradar.com/news/wearables/10-best-fitness-tra…

    • Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.

This is not suitable for swimming with.
You could go for the S3 Sport however.

      • It's IP68 ingress protection, so it has waterproofing. Or more accurately "water resistance".
And this rating is inline with other smartwatches, but inferior to proper waterproofed trackers and watches.

People have tested this swimming, and it doesn't skip a beat. In fact, the S3 is one of the very few smartwatches with a built-in speaker, and it also functions underwater. With this said, you really shouldn't take it swimming or showering or under a pressure washer. There's always a chance you may get a worse unit (ie lemon) and it might not be as resistant as someone else's. On top of that, ingress protection does wane over time so it could be weakened (hence why Diver watches get serviced). Especially with the S3 having the weakpoints of the speaker, mic, and rotating bezel.

I have seen people comfortably wearing and treating it like a 5 ATM watch.
So you could call it that rating, its definitely not a Diver's 30 ATM, 20 ATM, or even a 10 ATM rating though.
I personally wouldn't risk a $400 watch on our beaches (strong currents, harsh waves) that wasn't designed to handle it, maybe not even the pool, but a spa or shower is a risk I'd personally stake.

        • Yes I'm aware of all you've said, but one of the OPs requirements was to take it into the pool for swimming and this watch is not recommended for that.

    • Thanks for the details and links, any idea on best and most accurate SpO2 sensor on watches ?

  • Fitbit Ionic. You also need to take into account the user base / community and Fitbit have a good following.

    • I was sussing this bad boy out but from what I read, the application base may not have all that much support ? Or its early days and they aren't sure yet or something

  • Thanks for all the great replies guys!

Style isn't something that overly concerns me as I don't think I'll really be using it when I go out or anything. it's primarily for the fitness aspects.

Spotify control isn't a huge thing either, would just happen to be cool if the item featured it.

I'll do some extra reading on those sites provided for a little more insight. Thanks for your comments guys!

  • I second the Xiaomi Amazefit Bip. Does everything you want it (except spotify) and has a great battery life. Is IP68 water resistant.

    • Thanks for that. After your comment I sussed it out and it reads up really well on paper. I'm just concerned about the price, it's so cheap compared to others.

What's your experience with it, how long have you had it, how much do you use it etc?

      Cheers for the info!

I have had an Amazfit Bip for about two weeks now. Got it from one of the deals here. After ordering, I went onto ebay and ordered a few different coloured watch shells (it looks like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ultra-Slim-PC-Case-Cover-Protect…)

After getting the watch I’ve charged it only once. Once I paired it with the Mifit app, it updated to the new firmware, updated the A-GPS and the GPS. It has a few watch faces in the watch and a few more faces in the app. You can only update one face at a time from the app. There is another app called “Notify & Fitness for Amazfit” which I downloaded from Google Play store which I downloaded after setting the watch from MiFit. This app gave me a few more cool additional features for the watch. The watch gets notifications from emails and all apps, lets me know when I get calls and even gives me an option to let the call go to answermessage if I want. The watch is definitely water resistant. It gives me the weather where I am and for the next two days. I can set up a favourite activity and when I long press the dial, it goes into that activity mode to measure ny heartrate, steps and other things. Longpress again to stop it. It also has a compass.

I am in no way affiliated to the company, but for this price it is too good to pass up. I have had Miband 1 & 2 before and therefore am used to how Xiaomi’s work. This is a good piece of kit and I am glad I looked at other’s reviews here on OzB and bought it.

  • Funnily enough, the Fitbit Versa has just released, making my choice even more difficult :|.

Honestly I think I'll go with the Versa, as it seems to have most of my requirements and has fairly accurate Heart Rate monitoring, which is the most important thing to me. Now to find a bargain..

    • No GPS on the Versa, so can only map your runs if you take your phone along.

      • That's fine for me, most of my activities are either in the gym or the pool so I wasn't going to ever use the GPS function.
