I would advise anyone thinking about buying a GHD to do some research so they can make an informed decision before purchasing one.

In 2008 they moved production from Korea to China and the quality has seemingly dropped significantly. I have heard/read countless reviews from friends, other girls on beauty pages on facebook and productreview.com.au that have expressed their immense disappointment and problems associated with the newer models, especially the Platinum and Eclipse models. They are no where near the quality they once were. My 2007 model lasted me over 10 years and still works quite well, yet i've read so many comments from girls saying they had to replace their newer ones multiple times or that they didn't straighten as well as their old ones did.

Going by the 20+ polls/threads i've seen on facebook posts regarding this, the straighteners that are the most recommended and have consistent positive reviews are Cloud 9, Glam Palm and Muk. I did some reading and discovered that both Glam palm and Cloud 9 are made by the same manufacturer in Korea that made the original GHD straightener.

Cloud 9 is the new "it" straightener, I ended up purchasing a glam palm however as they seem to have more positive reviews overall and the customer service seems much better, even replacing parts of straighteners that were out of warranty.

I have not personally heard of this model of GHD, after a quick search the reviews seem rather positive overall so maybe they have improved. There are also still many people are happy with their GHD, but the amount of negative reviews for their products were too high for me to ignore.

    • Anecdotal at best so here is another anecdote to add to the discussion:

I bought a GHD for my wife in 2008, it's still going strong and let me tell you she doesn't treat it well!
That is daily use as well, not every now and then or a couple times a week.

Recently got her a Gold V (wide plate this time) and to me, it appears to be even better built than the "poor" Chinese 2008+ models.

Some of the best bang for buck electronics in my home are Chinese made.

Personally I have always been biased towards Japanese manufacturing but over the last 5 years or so I have been thoroughly impressed with some of the Chinese electronics that I own personally or use in my business.

The problem is that the Chinese manufacturing gamut is so varying (from excellent to absolute garbage) and this leads to mainstream perception that it is all junk but I believe that this perception is simply unjustified.

I am so sure that within 5-10 years time the best electronics will be Made in China.

The amount of technology you get for the price in for example an electric Xiaomi M365 scooter is unbelievable and simply unrivalled by any other electronics manufacturing giant.

      • I understand how my post probably came across as though I believe Chinese products are all of inferior quality, I didn't mean for this to be the case! I understand how much technology comes out of China and it would be silly of me to assume all of it was of poor quality, because I know that's not true. They play an extremely large part in the manufacturing of soooo many products we use every day, and people probably don't even realise. I'm also very impressed with the Xiaomi products I have bought/used for the price paid.

I was only stating how they have had many issues since moving production there, and that the specific manufacturer didn't seem to be of the same quality, making me think they may have chosen somewhere that made an inferior product for cheaper, because they could still thrive off of their immense reputation as the best straightener, people would continue to buy them anyway.

It's awesome to hear that she has had a positive experience with her newer model GHD, I understand that not all customers have issues and many absolutely adore their straightener, but I have just heard so so many negative experiences with them I felt it fair to share that with people who may wish to spend such an amount of money on one of these.

A friend of mine works for GHD and tells me this straightener (Gold V) has the least after sale and warranty issues.

I have purchased this pack for my wife's birthday. Thanks OP.

    • No worries! finally some positiveness :D

  • Received the package. The hair dryer is made in Hungary and the styler in China. Just letting everyone know.
