Light Laptop for Word Processing with Lots of Chrome Tabs, PDFs etc Open? $400 to $700, Cheaper The Better

My current machine

It is heavy, bulky, and completely (profanity) the bed with more than one or two programs open; sometimes even writing an essay is too much for it. I bought it for $400ish last year.

Basically I'm just after something that can do these tasks flawlessly without being too expensive. Cheaper the better! SSD and 8gb RAM would be the bare minimum I reckon, but you guys know more than me so I could be wrong about that.

Thanks guys.

  • What do you expect for 400?
Have you looked at the deals page?
Maybe spend more for something that’s actually suitable?

If you read the title, it says 400 is the minimum spend. The maximum is 700.

        Title said

        $400-700

        Equals -300

$399 … 8gb ram / 128gb emmc (much faster than hdd but slower than ssd and soldered non-upgradeable)

  • If you spend too little, you'll simply be making a regretful purchase.

$700 is a good starting point but a little more and you can get a Lenovo E480, which is a great laptop with the most recent 8-th gen Core series processor. Might be worth waiting for a deal from Lenovo.

If not look into a refurbished Dell from the Outlet. I can see a half-decent DFO-1LRNNJ2IP (CTRL F search to see it)

Your current machine should handle what you are doing.
If you added another 4Mb of RAM and an SSD it should be substantially snappier.
If you are happy to replace the DVD drive, you could get a sled for the SSD so you can just by a small SSD.
Looks like you could do this upgrade for about $80.

The alternative is a machine with a faster processor, but that is likely to start around $700 to get something noticeably faster, as Scrimshaw suggests.
In your shoes I would upgrade the RAM and SSD now, and budget for a new system in 18months or so.

    • Enlighten me on how to add 4Mb of RAM?

      • +1

Well, it will be tricky to find a 4Mb DDR3 SO-DIMM, but if you got a 4Gb one, you could apportion 4092Mb to a RAM disk, leaving the remaining 4Mb to increase system memory.
Or I could be more careful with my typing, young whipper snapper.

  • Do you need a full laptop, or could you make do with a Chromebook?

  • Check ebay. You'll find some gems in there.

    Got an Acer i5 6500u 8gb ram and 256 ssd for 300! 14 inch.

Im surprised that laptop is as you describe. My prev laptop was Dell inspiron 1520. Had core 2 duo, 2.5 gb ram and 120 gb hdd. Took 5 mins to start but everything else was okish…

  • Get a surface pro 3 second hand. Should easily handle your requirements and weighs very little.

  • Get a second hand Macbook Air (2014 model or later) for ~$700. I just sold my 2014 Macbook air for $750 yesterday. I originally paid $1000 for it brand new. It was still working flawlessly. I only sold it to upgrade to a newer macbook for another $150. I honestly believe Apple still makes the best lasting laptops as mine lasted 4 years without a single issue while my previously DELL, Acer and HP made my life real difficult after the first year.
