  • both showing 229 for me?

    • Yes it is only in store deal, not online

      • too quick for me haha

    • +1

      says in store only ;)

  • +3

I always thought the $229 was quite a bit over priced. Now they realised that no body was paying that price.

  • +1

Grabbed one, I was take close to paying full price at Xmas.

    • I also.

  • has anyone seen the lightning mcqueen one for a decent price?

  • +2

What is the purpose of these drones?

    • +1

fun. educational in a way if you believe it teaches kids how to program.

    • +2

      Collect dust?

    • +2

I'll play around with it and then it'll sit in my cinema room.

    • +3

Why the neg? It is a legit question?

    • +4

These aren't the droids you're looking for.

    • +1

Their lives have no purpose…. no meaning.. All drones are just here to entertain us (distract us) until they have the numbers to take over.

      • No one have developed AI for this to happen anytime soon :)

  • +1

I bought one for my 9-year-old for Christmas (paid full price). He hasn’t played with it since Boxing Day - even took him to the three droid workshops on offer at the Apple store (don’t know if they still run them).

    • +1

I have been looking at these for my 10 yr old and you have just confirmed exactly what I thought would be the case.

    • +4

9 year olds sure get pretty decent Xmas gifts these days

  • Have the original BB-8 and it has been sitting on the shelf for most of its life. Bought it for the free roaming but the "smarts" really aren't there. Created a few simple programs with it. There's no way for it to track where it is or where it has been, so it just ends up crashing into walls most of the time, or sits in one spot. If they were just a bit smarter and could create a map of their surroundings then it would be worth the price. Even if the phone app could track it through AR and send it location / obstacle info, that would be a huge improvement, and possible if they could be bothered doing updates.

Just got out the R2 and had a play around. It's a much better unit than the BB8, it's larger, has it's own built in speaker that sounds perfect and is a lot nicer to control. It also looks extremely good. A very premium toy indeed.

  • +1

Worked online for me with the BB-9e. I already have the BB8. They are a bit pointless but I use them for a code club.

    • They are a bit pointless but I use them for a code club.

      Code club?

      • +4

Lunchtime group the local public school. Teaching the kids basic coding skills. Some of the kids grasp it much better when they have a physical toy to interact with.

        • +7

You just broke the first rule of code club

  • got r2d2 and BB-9e , thanks OP

  • Bought online now, worked fine, even offered delivery if needed but went with the in store pickup

  • +1

Thanks OP. I was keen on the R2, but not at the original price, but $99 is low enough for this Star Wars tragic.

  • +1

    I can't wait to pick up my R2-D2 :D

I've been waiting for the right price!!!

  • Can't decide which one I want.. The bb one just roll around? Does it do anything else?

    • +3

Honestly, R2 is the better pick imo. We're forever picking up the BB8's head and putting it back on. The R2 is more robust and real feeling, it looks nicer especially with all of the lights, moving head, moving tripod etc. The fact that the sounds come from R2 and not from your phone like with BB8 is a big difference also. I left him on free roaming last night in the hallway/kitchen/living room and my 4yo was amazed (as was I lol)

      • +1

Thanks for your feedback. when I read 'where's that cake's post above I took my BB9E which I purchased a few hours earlier for an exchange to the R2. It's for an upcoming newphew's Birthday present but still, I want to get the best fun for the little boy.

  • Looks cool, for a star wars fan, and if speed wasn't a concern I would probably get one of these. My 'Spero Ollie' that I just ordered will run this thing down easily though. Almost twice the speed. These are probably waterproof though as other ball sphero are (sphero ollie is not) . Plenty of youtube vidoes demonstrating these type of things. My personal favourite was the race time trial of several different land based drones. Spoiler (Sphero Ollie wins).

It costs $9.9 to make one of these.

    • +2

      Provide your evidence sir.

      • Even if it did, that's business. You can't make one yourself for $9.90 can you?

Edit/ I seem to have replied to the wrong person dammit

  • Up on their ebay page as well https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Star-Wars-Episode-VIII-BB-9E-Sph… but its $5 shipping.

  • Should I get both?

    • +1

You should get 3 of each of them. Then send me a BB9E.

      • +2

If I had some lotto money lying around then I would do in a heart beat. For now I am a very self centered human being and after playing with my R2D2 yesterday (my 6 yo absolutely loved it) I am now thinking that the BB9E would be awesome as a rollin' toy. The build quality on the R2D2 as per your comment is truly premium and feels like a collector's item.

        • Buy the BB9E for your son … and you get to play with it when he sleeps!
          OzBargain wisdom.
Yes; most Star Wars items are manufactured with collectors mind. More adults buy the Star Wars toys than children ever did, unfortunately that meant that the toy manufacturers kept their prices up. Not all items made it to Australia, which were cheaper in U.S. but shipping costs can be offputting. If you know anyone visiting the U.S. then could possibly convince some to bring a treasured item home. I managed to buy the Genosian Battle Arena Beasts from Myers, for my son, years ago but most people have never seen them.

  • Not sure how OP got $99 from ebay? Mine came to $101 delivering to WA?

    • Delivery for the eastern states is only $4.95

      • That's explain that.. Again, the "perk" of living west..

  • Are these all sold out now on eBay?

    • +1

Yes but still available at EB, use the "find in store" link.
