Left $400 at The ATM. Will I Get It Back?

I went shopping on Saturday, and withdrew $400 from a credit union ATM.

Realised 40 minutes later that I forgot to take the cash from the machine. Of course it was gone. Had a lot on my mind at the time, but still feeling pretty stupid. Luckily it was my credit union, so I went inside to report it. They confirmed the exact time I withdrew the money and that the cash had been taken.

Went to centre management, who arranged to have any CCTV looked at. I then emailed the credit union and asked they don't throw away the used receipts without checking. Later that night I get a call from security saying they saw a woman take it, and it looked like she stuffed the money into where used receipts are put. I then emailed the credit union and asked they don't throw away the used receipts without checking. Filled out an online police report, and the police called and said they will look into it.

Got a call from the credit union today, they checked the waste bin, but found nothing. Sent me a form to fill out, will be returning it tomorrow. Police have not contacted me again.

Is there anything else I should do?, and what do you reckon my chances are of getting the money back?

Well if the money's not there then pretty slim chance. Bank isn't going to give you 'another' $400. Had the woman not taken it, the machine would have taken it back in and not charged your account. Chances don't sound too good at the moment, sorry.

its not a police issue, doubt they would put much time into it.
if the bank says they can't locate it, i dont't think you will get it back, just unlucky.
if it makes you feel any better i got robbed of $1000 US cash at an atm once.

    • The police have told me this is a theft, and they emailed me saying it is under investigation.

      • Yer, finding money and taking it is a crime.

      • how is it theft,a woman found the money that you left behind, and put it in the used receipt box (a stupid thing to do but). Where is the theft

"Theft by finding" is the charge - if she didn't put the money in the receipt bin and she kept it. You must make reasonable efforts to return something you find to its lawful owner.

        • It's called conversion. It's unlawful to take someone else's property and move it to somewhere that they can't find it.

The woman should've handed the cash to the credit union, a police station or simply left it there.

I don't think she would have stuffed $400 in the receipt bin. Anyways, it's gonski.

The ATM Receipt Bin Maintenance Co-ordinator thanks you for doubling his fortnightly pay.

They could of stuffed it somewhere (e.g. pants) while making it look like they put it in the receipt bin.

Yes, anytime I'm depositing bank notes into a receptacle I thrust my crotch into the entrance of said receptacle also.

Only works if you have some yellow sandpaper as well…

  • Unlikely.

This happened to a mate, he left 600 in the atm slot. He rang the bank and they credited it back to him without issue as a goodwill gesture. They never said if somebody took it or anything. Was Westpac btw.

It probably got sucked back into the machine

      • Can ATM's actually pull cash back in like that?

        • Yes, I did the same thing, but I was fiddling around unlocking my bike so I hadn’t left the location and there was no one else nearby.

Heard 3 loud beeps, looked up and saw the money vanish into the machine. Called up and they said they’d investigate and reverse the transaction if everything checked out, which of course it did. This was CBA.

        • Yep, happened to me. I forgot to take my cash like the OP and realised a minute later, went back and it was gone. I visited the bank the next day and they said it wasn't taken.

Yes, but depends on the model

The ones which hold the cash in a loose grip can. The ones which drop it into a tray can't.

        • Yes! I took too long to grab the money and suck back it went in. Had to go into the bank and they just gave it to me knowing the atm would have excess money at end of day

    • Was it the grad?

    i took it
    thanks very much

  • nope

  • So you go to the Atm to get money, money come out and you just leave with the card?

People have accidentally left their babies in their car…

    LOL
    Dont ask us.
    Looking in the wrong place.
    Ask the bank

  • Later that night I get a call from security saying they saw a woman take it, and it looked like she stuffed the money into where used receipts are put.

If this is true, the woman literally put money in the bin. How stupid can you be? May has well have thrown it down the drain.

I found $50in a CU ATM (There was no queue or people around) and rang my CU. They said it's up to the person to report and not to spend it just yet!! However with the ATM's accepting anyones card these days (and according to you it was a valid transaction) I doubt if you'll get your dosh back. I waited 3 months as advised by CU and nobody claimed it so they advised me I could keep it. There are a lot of elderly people shopping where this ATM is located so I would not have liked to rob some pensioner.

Too much drama over $400; Years ago, my car was stolen and a couple of weeks later police found evidence of wrecking. After about 2 years of reading police/court emails/responding etc, the guy was convicted of theft in court and ordered to do community service, yet unable to pay me a cent! So, all that court had to say to me was that "Justice served!" but he can't pay you, sorry!

  • I recently did this with $100. I had to lodge a form with my bank, they paid it back the next day. But also said if there's an investigation and it shows I was fraudulent then the money could be taken back out of my account.

  • I am surprised (from experience of a my car being damaged once) that centre management looked into the CCTV footage before you provided them with a police report number.
