BCAAs during Overseas to Prevent Muscle Loss?

Hey guys,

I'll be heading overseas for 4 to 5 weeks for an internship, and although I'm planning on joining a gym and trying to keep up my caloric intake, I know from previous experience that I'll definitely shrink quite a bit due to my hectic schedules and excess of walking etc.

So I'm thinking of bringing a long a whole tub of BCAAs and sipping on them every day just to prevent my muscles from going catabolic, and hence theoretically minimising muscle loss. Obviously the best way to maintain muscles is to keep up my caloric intake, but I'm thinking of this idea as a backup measure to further ensure the least amount of muscle will be lost. What do you guys think?
Thanks!

Wouldn’t bother imo. 5 weeks isn’t that long and it’s unlikely you’ll lose much, if any, muscle especially if you’re still going gym and eating right

I was away for 3 weeks in asia and lost about 10 kilograms and got noticeably smaller due to a crap tonne of walking and eating less food. But yeah definitely try to keep up the gym and diet.

  • Do you really need to ask the internet if you should bring one tub of supplement? If you know it helps, just do it!

    • I would like to see if anyone has had results from doing the same thing perhaps :)

You don't seem to understand that BCAA's don't do anything.

PubMed would disagree with your assertion.

      • I don't know who he is…..

I'm not really conscious of my size or "gains" but I can testify that 2.5 weeks or more of holidays will always set me back in the number of pull-ups I can do. But I generally don't eat or sleep that well on holidays.

From the times I've tested myself over the years, I often feel stronger after the first week ("fully rested") and then at about 2-3 weeks of doing nothing, everything comes crumbling down. From a quick Google I "think" science backs me up on this.

For you guys, I suppose body weight only exercises are your off-days…and you might recover strength quicker.

My experience definitely mirrors yours. the first week of holiday, I'm fine, but as soon as the end of the 2 weeks creep up, I noticeably lose size. I just wonder whether BCAAs would help in preventing as much loss of the muscle.

even going to the gym every 3 days and eating half decently will do a lot more than drinking bcaas

BCAA's offer minimal benefit on top of an appropriate diet and exercise plan. If you're worried about losing strength/muscle tissue due to a large caloric deficit, then you won't yield much benefit from BCAA's such that it would be noticeable.
