Getting a Mobile Device Unlocked - Experiences / Suggestions?

The misso foolishly purchased an Optus branded ZTE MF920V prepaid wireless broadband device. Long story short, after being chronically dicked around by Optus it was decided to return the device for a refund and then purchase a replacement Telstra/VF one. To avoid giving in entirely I figured I might try an online unlocking service in order that I could buy a Jeenee SIM and get the 50gb for $54 deal, at least until NBN arrives next month at her address.

All of the results from google appear to be dubious at best, based on Trustpilot etc reviews. Of the 2 eBay listings I've attempted to use get it unlocked, 1 came back and said a code was "unavailable" and refunded, the second, despite promising the code "10min to 1 hour, but can take up to 24hr", failed to deliver anything after what is now 44hrs.

Anyone had success with unlocking their device via 3rd parties? Optus want $100 worth of credit to unlock, but that it took 1hr+ on the phone & transferred via various departments to not have an account issue resolved, they can G&GF. I'm looking for recommendations of a reputable vendor to assist in unlocking the device, or, if my fellow OzBargainers think it simpler, to obtain a refund from Target & buy a replacement (telco branded, or network unlocked from Umart etc)?

Thanks for your thoughts & input in advance.

  • Reflash the firmware with an unlocked one? Will void warranty though.

    • Thanks for that, I hadn't considered that option…I'll look into it, but if you have any resources you could point me towards, that'd be greatly appreciated!

Not really concerned about the warranty, I was hoping to get an unlock solution for a lesser price than the original cost.

    • I don't know about this device, but network locked/unlocked status is usually stored in the /efs partition on Android which is not overwritten by firmware flashing (otherwise you'd lose your IMEI too).

  • Just hand it back, get a Telstra one and if like my old man you have had a Telstra account scream at the Indian lady on the other end for 15 mins until she unlocks it to get rid of you…

    • Sage advice LMAO, but Telstra use Filipino staff IIRC, they can be painful, but are mostly easy to deal with.

  • +1

I'd just hand it back and get a refund if you can. Then find one of those $30 unlocked Optus modems (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/371169) - yes, I know it's still Optus, but what the hey. It's unlocked. When or if the included 4Gb data runs out, then throw the Jeenee sim in.
