Mirror Phone Screen to Projector without Wi-Fi

Hey there. We often have a few beers and watch the footy in my mate's shed. It's fine when it's on free to air TV (set top box plugged into projector HDMI port) but for the games that aren't on FTA we can't figure out how to get the game from our phones to the projector.

Theres no option to get broadband/NBN connected to this shed. We have both AFL Live passes through Telstra and a Foxtel Now subscription for Fox Footy but without wifi we can't cast the screen of our Android phones to a Chromecast or use an apple tv with the iphones.

Any ideas how we can get the footy on the big screen without wifi?

Cheers

i think you don't need internet to have wifi network ?

Can you not just use your phone as a hotspot then connect a laptop to the signal, log on to Foxtel Now on the laptop and plug the laptop into the HDMI port on the projector?

    • Potentially that would work. Hopefully the laptop wouldn't use any more data than a phone streaming it would.

Depending on your Android phone, use MHL cable.

First off… Why? Can you not use a range extender? Powerline ethernet to an access point?

What type of android phones do you have?

Can you buy a chrome cast and then hotspot your phone? Or buy a Telstra portable hotspot?

    I know Samsung support MHL e.g. http://www.alltech.com.au/en/cables-adaptors-/405-micro-usb-…

    • By shed I mean an old shearing shed on the farm well away from the house. It's on a separate power circuit, too far to lay cable affordably and too many trees and things in the way to try a point to point wireless thingy

  • Foxtel now will look like shit on a projector, you'll barely be able to make out the players. The resolution is 720p for live streams, but its a terribly low bit rate. They have the tech to bump it to 4K (as they do in the UK), but they for some stupid reason refuse to do it.

    • I don't find 720p that bad. Much better than the AFL app.

      • It looks like shit on my 65 inch. I dread to think what it would look like on a projector

        • We watch through a Telstra Tv box plugged into our 50 inch and it's clearer than channel 7

@mrned: 50 inch? What is that, a TV for ants?

It sounds like your best bet is to use your mobile connection (afl is data free on Telstra with the live pass), steam the afl on your phone with this, then get a micro USB to HDMI cable similar to this: https://www.auselectronicsdirect.com.au/1.8m-mhl-micro-usb-t…

Only concern is that the streaming app may block output signals, as some streaming apps block the output signal because they want you to buy the proper Foxtel instead.

    • Yeah from what I'm reading they might block it. Might have to look into a jailbroken patch that lets it happen perhaps

If it's like the NRL live pass you won't be able to connect an external display to your phone. You used to be able to do by screen mirroring over a Chromecast or via a MHL cable for phones and TVs that support it. But Telstra have disabled that this year.

If you have Foxtel now and the correct level of subscription, you should be able to to mirror the screen to an external display. An android device that supports MHL and the TV/projector that supports MHL is your best bet if you don't have a wifi network.

Despite what someone said above, as long as your projector isn't too big it should be watchable. The NRL games a fine to watch via foxtel now on a reasonably big TV. It's not HD but it's definitely watchable. I assume AFL is similar.

    • I'll have to check all the boys' phones and see who's is MHL compatible.
      Cheers

  • Why not use what you already have put your chrome cast in guest mode and connect it to your phone without the need for wifi
