    Go to HK perhaps?

Jetstar has flights to HK for around $700 return currently. Finding a TV set shouldn't be a problem once you get there.

Else you can subscribe to TVB satellite TV

  • I do have it. I can watch it on tv but I always miss out due to schelling

  • a VPN (Virtual Private Network) in Hong Kong is probably the best way to deal with it if they have an online catchup service. A VPN makes it look like you're connecting to the service locally rather than from Oz.

  • i may have missed the point, but i always watch shows and youtube clips blocked in australia with http://hidemyass.com/ and other proxy hiding sites

  • I just checked out TVB's myTV (http://mytv.tvb.com/) and it is only available to residents in Hong Kong. Maybe you can ask someone you know in HK to run a small proxy there. Otherwise just google "Hong Kong VPN".

You can watch hundreds of live broadcasts including mainland China (many of them are HD format), Taiwan and Hong Kongs's TVB and ATV with it. The best part is that it is totally free. I've been watching it over a year and have stopped subscribing TVBJ since then.

    Cheers.

    • I've updated it. and now it want to install some software to use it

    • Nice!

  • ^OMG I just come christmas!

    thankyou

  • I went to write that and the program was gone.

I then accidently uninstalled and now reinstalled and the main screen doesn't work.

  • Online? why not watch TV by the cable?

  • i do

  • Good find copycat.

Abraham11: last time I looked the TVB cable service actually don't have current shows, their schedule for dramas were 2-3 weeks behind. That was a fair while ago mind.

  • similar to what copycat said, my parents use PPStream to watch chinese series. it looks like the same program.

    http://www.pps.tv

    • Yep, most of my Chinese friends use PPStream…seems to keep them happy, but installs far too much crap in the background on your system for my liking!

  • Well, if the locals are watching streamed tv (the equivalent of iview) just buy a proxy for like $8/mo in china :)

  • Just came back from a New Year party from a friend's place — a middle-aged Anglo but has those huge Satellite dish in his backyard so he can get 40+ channels of Chinese TV!! He is learning Mandarin as a hobby though.

    • I thought the satellite signals were encrypted somehow?

      • Easily decrypted with a basic homemade tinfoil hat though! :p

      • I think there are two types — one with smaller dish (average wok size) which you need a decoder + monthly subscription. The other one is those big dish at 2 metre in diameter. He got those ones. It still has a decoder box, but he said the dish + installation fee was around $800 a few years ago. And no subscription fee so it's once off.

    • Scotty, I reckon your mate's on the right track! I've found that TV can be an excellent tool for language learning if you have the right aptitude. When I was in China, I learned heaps more language by watching TV and paying attention to contextual cues; and also by using the hardcoded (Simplified) subs to improve my understanding of the written form.

The only trouble is, you can get addicted to the strangest things, like the original Sun Wukong (Monkey King) and Bing Shan Shang De Lai Ke (The Guests from Ice Mountain)! :)

I suspect this phenomenon is why programs like Rosetta Stone work so well! ;)

  • I can't get this program to stream on the second date.

  • the proxy service is like 30$ a month

    • I think this is the mob my friend uses $8/mo. however i just realised its japan, not china.

      $15 USD/mo - i cant vouch for this company.

Haha. Can't imagine people are actually PAYING to get behind the Great Firewall of China.

        • You'd be surprised, TVB is the drug of choice for an entire chinese region. :)

  • It's most likely illegal, but just thinking maybe a few people can get together and get 1 TVB australian subscription and the person with the physical connection can setup a slingbox. That way the cost is spread out a bit. I don't know how it will work with multiple channels though.

  • you can try downloading the shows like i do. i use http://www.popularasians.com
get an account and go to their download section for tv series.
