    They're not very nice.

    • +6

      Which ones?

I love the sea salt and rosemary ones. Only thing is, the bags are very small (600g). I usually just get a 1kg bag of Homebrand fries for about $1.50 and season them myself when I want to cook fries.

      • Both. I got freebies of each when they first came out.

Yeah I like the Aldi or Coles brand best. Woolies ones don't seem to crisp up even when I spray them with oil.

Otherwise it's McCains, they're always good.

        • +2

You are ovening them? That may be the difference. I deep fry fries and these Birds Eye ones turn out beautifully crisp on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. Maybe they just don't turn out as well in the oven like most fries.

        • +1

Yeah I love these deep fried as well.

        • +3

          @FiftyCal

If you're adding seasoning and deep frying them, why not just get the fresh potatoes from scratch as well?

        • @FiftyCal: yeah grill them. It's only the Woolies ones that don't crisp properly.

Anyway as I said IMHO these aren't very nice, the flavours taste fake.

        • +1

          @chalky:
Because at $1.50 per kg for the Homebrand stuff it's actually cheaper than fresh potatos.

And it's also way easier to buy a bag and just chuck the fries into the fryer than making them from scratch.

        • +1

          @chalky:

          Because time is valuable?

        • +1

I found the Woolworths steak cut chips to be pretty good. It might be a different range - it's not the home brand ones in the white bag - have you tried these? Very cheap at $2 a kg.

I stopped getting Aldi frozen chips because I found they didn't cook very evenly - always burned at the tips compared to the one time I bought McCains or something.

        • @chalky:

They've probably been fried twice and the inside isn't just potato, and probably mixed with beef tallow etc.

        • @FiftyCal:

I oven them, they are still nice IMHO. I can only imagine deep frying would be delicious

        • @Icecold5000: why are you on ozbargain then?

        • @lux:

Definitely not to save $2 on making making my own chips when my time is worth a lot more than that. When you understand the difference between price and value you'll get it.

        • +1

@brnaodn: I second the Woolies steak cut chips. Great value for a decent chip that goes crisp in the oven.

  • Just saw them half price at coles too. Would've bought if I had an air fryer (looking into buying now, got recommendations from other OZBargainers).

It doesn't turn out good in my oven.

    • +3

Coles only has the potatoes on sale not chips
Their catalogue has the wrong product photo shown

These come out amazing in an air fryer

      • My Coles also had the chips, yellow tag shrugs

      • Blonky what air fryer do you have?

        • +3

Just a generic COTD one for $60.
They are simple devices, basically a fan forced over but with a metal deep fryer type basket to help cook evenly. Shake it every 5mins and it comes out perfect

        • @blonky:

Nice do you use any oil in yours or is it simply put the chips in the tray and turn it on that's it?

        • +1

          @montorola:
For store bought no need to add anything, quite a bit of oil is added during the manufacturing process and drips off in the fryer
Home made yes you do need to coat in oil before air frying. Best to blanch then coat in oil and air fry - or freeze after blanching so it’s ready in your freezer to air fry for next time

        • @blonky:

Thanks mate! I'll definitely look into an air fryer now!

I haven't tried this specific one but it's similar to a cheap one I have and love and Kmart Mums Australia Facebook group are raving about it (so it might be tricky to find stock). Holes might be a bit annoying to clean but easier than the mesh on some Phillips ones.

    • Turns out beautifully in my fan forced oven, following directions.

Comes out crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, just how I like it. Most other chips are soft on the outside when oven baked.

  • +3

Only downside to these is they tend to stick together in the deep fryer, but they taste amazing (Sea Salt & Rosemary). Can never go back to plain generic frozen chips after eating these and McCain Beer Battered…

  • +4

Do not read into the health star rating. It is a joke.

    • +1

If a person only ate the recommended serving size, it'd be somewhat accurate (as an energy source..).

      • Probably, I always end up cooking and eating half of a 1kg bag (so I've never been able to buy these 600g bags cause I may as well cook the whole bag), because I just like to fill up the big oven tray

    • +4

Only for those that dont understand how it works. It only offers a comparison with other products within the same category. So if im trying to compare the healthiness between two types of frozen chips ( or two types of muesli bars or cereals) then its quite helpful to determine its healthiness relative to the other products in the same group. But if you are using it to compare it to the healthiness of an apple, then it wont work..

  • +1

THE BEST! No joke, genuine post

  • +2

The Sea salt and rosemary are my favourite chips ever.

  • +1

    i love chippies

  • +3

For real, you won't want to eat premade fries if you make yours in a halfway decent manner.

My method: - slice potatoes in half and then thin wedges
    -parboil potatoes
-make batter out of flour (I use self raising) and add soda water or beer until runny and about the consistency of cream.
-heat oil in pan and keep at medium high heat and shallow fry potatoes after dipping in batter

I then season it with pink salt mixed with fresh rosemary and garlic. Better than anything you can get in freezer or most cafes

    • +4

OK I'll just put aside a spare three hours for all that!

      • +3

It takes less time to make than it takes to preheat my oven. Parboiling is the most time consuming and takes about 10 minutes. Chopping and making the batter takes all of 5 minutes and frying another 5 minutes. Id say 30 mins until you have fries ready to eat and that's conservative.
Your comment is fair for preparing a lot of food, but not chips

        • +8

@LUTSlit: I'm not, and I don't. Just wanted to join the discussion on oven chips by sharing a cheap, quick and delicious recipe I know. I must have hit a sore spot for you and whoever negged me but I don't think anything ive said is unreasonable.

        • +1

@CaptainNewspeak: i'll stick with my half price birds eye frozen chips. Prep time = 30 seconds (and that's conservative)

        • @LUTSlit: What a menace to society!

        • @Diji1: just STOP

    • You could try freezing the taters after parboiling them. The water crystals mash the potato internally making it fluffy.

      • Nice tip, I usually cool them in ice water after boiling but I'll give that a go next time (and saves prep time if already boiled and frozen)

Come on guys. If we're putting this up we might as well just individually post every single half price item from the coles or woolies catalogue every week.

    • -1

      We missed Savas 😢

    • This is posted because this item rarely goes for half price. Usually on sale it is $2.5. So I think there is a strong reason to post this.

  • Nature Flavour, ah that smell of fresh nature…

    wonder where onion comes from…

  • +1

Had these earlier this week. Needs more cooking time than on package otherwise soggy and tasteless.

    • Did you note that the bag says 220C

  • +3

These are yum chips. Thanks OP

  • They got rid of my favorite flavours: Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper, and Sea Salt and Chilli. They were my favorite chips.

I don't like Parmesan. Rosemary is ok. Haven't bought in a long time.

  • +1

Can’t believe they got rid of the Chilli & Sea Salt one.

    • That was the best. I think they got rid of it for the wedges also. :(

Aussies are not like asians. They see 'chili' and go 'no thanks.' So that one didn't sell and they discontinued it.

  • Great deal but everytime I've tried these I've ended up with green ones (that taste just doesn't go away).
