    Thats some expensive honey

    • I know; thats why we are giving discounts to our customers. Unfortunately, manuka Honey doesn't come in cheap nowadays and we hope our offers will reach to wider public.

      Cheers,
      Fiona

      • Can you tell us a bit about the benefits of this honey for consumption, over normal honey?

So can coat hangers. But you don’t see coat hanger manufacturers bragging about it or selling their products at exorbitant prices.

I have watched this clip before - go watch it before you think about buying some of this honey :)

    • my experience with manuka - came off a bike in the mountains, where trails were recently sprayed with effluent. a first-aider used manuka (medicinal, in a tube) after washing/scrubbing my wound. went to see doc a few days later and he said there were no signs of infection, but gave me a tetanus shot anyway.

having said that, i did buy and apply a tub of manuka honey umf10 from countdown (their woolies).

did either of the manuka product work? it wasn't a controlled test. my leg was pretty roughed up, but new skin was pretty pink. so i think it helped.

at least manuka didn't cause it to get worse…

Regular honey has been being used like that for thousands of years. But regular honey doesn't produce the profit levels of Manuka, and thus doesn't have the same marketing budget.

        • +1

True (although i was hesitant to put any kind of food product on my wound!)

Wish there was sufficient science around this to prove/disprove. Where are all our scientists at?

Nice to hear positive vibes from you.

In deed, we had many similar stories. One customer had issues with her stomach since she could remember, and she has been to a number of doctors, she is a doctor herself, but couldn't work out what it is. She gave manuka honey a try, and now felt so much better. She has been with us for the last few years.

I myself use manuka honey on regular basis and use it more if I had sore throat. It works brilliantly for me.

My experience with people who use it is generally positive.

Price is an issue, but it is not in our control. And we are here to offer a good deal. Unfortunately people didn't see it. This deal won't last.

    Over $150 kg for honey… LOL… No bargain here…

  • How does it compare to this Manuka Honey?

  • if you're into Manuka Honey, Costco has 500G for <$35, should be higher rated than 20+

    • Costco "Manuka" honey is shit, UMF is 5+ the bare minimum to be required to be called "manuka" and 75% natural

"The minimum UMF rating recognized is UMF5, however, it is not considered beneficial unless it carries a UMF 10+ level of antibacterial activity in the honey. Anything ranging from UMF10-UMF15 is a useful level, and anything UMF16 and up is considered a superior quality."

    • the current batch is not umf 20+, they use a mgo rating

  • Because we are killing the planet and hence killing its animals (such as bees) the overall price of Honey is increasing. That said there is no justification to pay the suggested prices here for Honey. As long as it is natural honey and not diluted (looks at Panda Honey lol >.>) i am happy with it.

This is a serious question: what is the difference between this and the $5 bottle honey at Woolies? Isn't honey, honey? Is it different bees? What?

it sells in Asia for big bucks, you can actually buy Manuka in Woolies, but the still expensive Manuka you get in Woolies is "manuka blend"

Mānuka honey is a monofloral honey produced from the nectar of the mānuka tree. The honey is commonly sold as an alternative medicine. While components in mānuka honey are studied for their potential antibacterial properties in vitro,[1] there is no conclusive evidence of medicinal or dietary value other than as a sweetener.

    • How gullible a person is.

  • It's specifically from bees getting pollen from manuka trees or something. Which you can't guarantee they will do. Hence the purity rating so you know what you're buying. Hence also the rarity and price

I think most of it needs to come from NZ due to the need for the manuka tree.

This is all from a lunchtime convo so you can do your research to check

      • Ridiculously high prices for Manuka honey are not justified.
Manuka honey is just the honey from Manuka trees. Why should it be more expensive? It's the same process as any other honey - made by bees, collected by humans.

ANY honey has anti-bacterial properties. However, these properties degrade when the honey is treated during processing/packaging over certain temperature and filtration.
So anyone who wants good honey with anti-bacterial properties and health benefits just needs to buy Raw honey instead of any processed honey generally sold everywhere, especially in the supermarkets.
You will get much better value for your money buying Raw honey than buying Manuka honey and you will still get lots of healthy benefits. Furthermore, Manuka honey often might be heated and filtered, hence loosing most of the honey benefits. In this instance, you are definitely better off buying Raw honey.

    Reasonable article:

    Dear all Ozbargain folks,

With a bit of discouragement that I felt many of you didn't appreciate our generosity towards the community. I read all the comments and feedbacks and personally felt that many of you didn't have good understanding of manuka honey.

While I leave it to you to decide who are convinced about its health benefits, the link here will help to give you more information:
    https://theconversation.com/science-or-snake-oil-is-manuka-h…

This article is written by real scientists, and I left it there for you to think. It answers many of your questions.

I think its unfair to mark my post as negative. Comparing different brands of manuka honey is like compared apple to orange, they never match. You can have manuka honey blend for as cheap as honey from orange blossoms. There are tests done in laboratory in each batch of manuka honey to measure their quality and purity.

We dont decide the price, the market does. As people are more aware of its health benefits, the demand grows and so does the price.

I post the discount here, so that more people from Oz bargain community can take advantage of it.

    Best of health,
    Fiona

"Manuka may inhibit the bacteria that cause a sore (“strep”) throat or gingivitis, but the main components responsible for the antimicrobial activity won’t survive the digestion process."

"Manuka honey isn’t a panacea or a superfood. But it is grossly underutilised as a topical treatment for wounds, ulcers and burns, particularly in the face of the looming global superbug crisis."

    • +2

Did you even read that article you linked to?

      Final verdict

If consumers are buying manuka honey for general daily use as a food or tonic, there is no need to buy the more active and therefore more expensive types. But the right kind of honey is very effective as a wound dressing. So if manuka is to be used to treat wounds or skin infections, it should be active, sterile and appropriately packaged as a medicinal product.

The best way to ensure this is to check the product has a CE mark or it’s registered with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (marked with an AUST L/AUST R number).

So are you selling this as a food (where it has zero benefit as Mic Cullen says as well compared to regular honey) or as a medical product? Because I can’t see the CE mark or the AUST L/AUST R number on the packaging.

Please see The Checkout link I posted earlier if you need to actually know what you’re trying to sell.
