New cheap mower and whipper snipper?

Hi all, I'm afer a new mower and whipper snipper (both died at the same time of course while the lawn is 2 feet high :P). I know Kmart have had some cheapies around in the past, but I couldnt see anything on their website.

Can you guys point me to some good deals for both (preferably from the same place IF possible, but not essential if better deals are to be had). I dont really want to spend more than $100 for a whipper snipper and $200 for a mower if possible.

Thanks!

  • sre you looking for electric? or petrol?

electric is significantly cheaper, but you need a long power cord

  • Sorry, should have mentioned both need to be petrol!

    • I am in the same boat as you, but try scoping out Bunnings, they have a wide range of stuff. I've been borrowing off people last few months and really testing the friendship now…

For $100 you be hard pressed to find a petrol whipper snipper NEW
and the same goes for a petrol lawn mower NEW… unless its junk
Maybe eBay? for second hand for your budget..

      • I bought a GMC cheapo whipper snipper for $100 from Bunnings about 5 years ago, I normally make the 2-stroke mix a bit heavy on the oil compared to what it says in the manual.

It puts out a little bit of smoke (hehe) but still goes good every weekend.

Mixing it with lots of oil is actually damaging to the engine dude; even though you think you're giving it more lube for protection, it actually leans out the mixture causing all sorts of heat & wear problems! :o

  • hmmmmm imo head to bunnings and have a look. There are a few brands with a 3 year replacement warranty at bunnings. You'd have to check their catalogue though :/

  • BigW…the 'Pope' branded stuff is pretty good, not sure about the 'Talon', I've got no experience with that.

When it comes to lawnmowers, get one with a four-stroke 'Briggs & Stratton" engine, they're as reliable as clockwork! ;)

  • I got a Talon whipper-snipper from BigW 3 or 4 years ago. It's a bit of a pain in the back with it having a short "shaft" (or whatever you call the main pole thing), but the only thing I've needed to fix was a perished fuel line, which you can get for $5 a metre from a mower supplies shop. Otherwise it's still going strong.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I went to Bunnings and got a display model 'Sprinter' 4stroke with a Briggs & Stratton 450series engine for $199 and a Homelite 26cc curved shaft whipper snipper for $99. Both were exactly what I budgeted for. I'll give them a try this arvo or tomorrow and let you know how they go.

Awesome, it's not like display model would have been used.

      • unless some-one trimmed their bush ;).

        • Damn, that would have been one overgrown bush :)

    • $2 under budget. gotta be happy with that!

  • Based on my experience, I'd recommend to steer well away from the cheap Kmart/Big W mowers. I bought a Pope branded one, and it has been nothing but trouble. Repairs go to a local agent who doesn't seem that interested in fixing them, and one time charged me for his 'fault finding' including spark plug and changing the fuel as it might have gone stale (it was only 6 weeks old).

As a suggestion (and I know you clearly stated you wanted a new one), but I'd look for a second hand one for $200 on Gumtree or something like that. GF has a Rover model, powered by a Briggs and Stratton engine and it is so much better than my crappy Pope.

Whipper snipper, I picked up a GMC when they were being cleared out by Big W for $50, and it's been pretty good. I think the Talon ones are exactly the same, just different badges. But it's not a Stihl.. !!

  • Has anyone found an online mower and brushcutter store that offers savings?

    • I ended up getting a Sprinter model mower with Briggs & Stratton motor from Bunnings for ~ $245…. quite impressed. The Pope brand at Big W was similarly priced but the Sprinter looked the goods.
