I'm getting the 2017 version of XPS 13 9360 (8th gen i5) and while waiting for it to ship I'm looking around for a cheap cable or adapter that can help me output to HDMI external monitor.
I read some forums and found that there is some confusion around the kind of adapter that can work with this version of the XPS 13 (different version of the port, USB type C and mini display port terminology etc…) so wondering if you can point me to a correct one to order?

I feel like you kind of already knew the answer to this, but you can't just by a straight-through USB-C to HDMI cable.
You will need an adapter such as ALOGIC USB-C to HDMI Adapter
From there you can use whatever cheap HDMI cable you want.
*edit* also, the Dell XPS 13 does not have mini-display port.
You have two USB A ports and one USB C port. (No HDMI, DVI, VGA, or mini-display port)
You need the USB-c to HDMI adaptor. I have a 2017, 8th gen i7 one and i just bought the one form Kmart. Works like a charm. It was $15 (Cheaper stuff on ebay may be there).

It does the work and i know i can exchange it incase it doesnt work

Dell have an adapter, needing this ultimately turned me off getting a Dell for work because I needed ethernet. See here, can be found cheaper elsewhere.

Look at the specifications, by typing model number and look at Dell's site, and see what video out it has.
Then you need a <whatever the out is> to HDMI (male to male).
Eg. Mini-displayport to HDMI
Then you can find it on either eBay, Amazon US/AU or Staticice. I noticed ATM Amazon AU has a lot of cheap cables.
If you want a place to buy it cheap, no hassles about quality then MSY is good.
