  • have a look at myer this time of the year.

    • myer - i say pffft to them (nothing against you)
      1. they have had the same stuff in the mens department for the last 3 years (the time i have been in melbourne)
      2. their "specials" in the mens department over xmas/NY have been the same ones that they have been rolling out every 3/12.
      3. The actual savings are worse than last year.

Was at bossini in southlands yesterday - yes cheap, true not hugo boss, but at least they have 50% off their suits this time of year…

and 4. their winging about imports is a joke :P

I wrote this before Myer, Hardly Normal etc. got their panties in a twist about all the money they lost this Christmas so I'm now inclined to agree. I won't be buying anything from them in the meantime if I can help it (not that I do much now anyway). They're a bunch of whining school children bemoaning the fact that their 19th century business model is ill-suited to the modern world, and rather than figuring out a way of making themselves relevant and profitable have gone crawling to the government for a quick fix. GRRR.

  • Myer Blaq and Kenji suits aren't too bad for the money.

  • Are wool suits the go? Got my first corporate role so i am also thinking about getting 1 for now. Any other good specific brands worth a look at?

    Are wool suits the go?

Unless you want to look like you're going to your first court appearance, yes. I spent 10 years working in a very formal office where I had to wear a suit and tie everyday and used to get all my suits at Zara, but until they eventually make it over here the choice is limited. Myer is a good place to start, Benetton aren't too bad (sorry, is that in Brizzie?). Reserve stuff at Myers is just horrible. It's actually very hard to find something good over here :-/

    My 2 cents:
Most importantly, wherever you go, get something that FITS. My first few suits looked like bags on me until I figured out how to shop for them. Even if you love the colour/price/design, if it doesn't fit walk away. That means the jacket should fit neatly around the shoulders and the sleeves should be long enough but not too long (you should be able to see about 2cm of shirt cuff). trousers should fit fairly snugly around the waist and be long enough but not too long (you can always take them up/get them taken up). Don't rush after whatever's fashionable, buy something classic. 2/3 button, charcoal or mid-grey, probably with a light pinstripe never looks bad. Think James Bond or Mad Men, NOT the Matrix or an AFL player on a night out.

Shoes; get some black lace ups, again think simple (e.g. Oxfords). Not slip-ons, they make you look like a car salesman (I understand this is personal choice but take a look at what the stars wear in Ocean's 11, North by Northwest etc.). Get black with a matching simple black belt.

Shirt; again, simple; white, blue or a light/simple stripe. If you have to wear a tie (ugh) don't go nuts and make sure it matches. If you're not sure, ask a woman (I'm presuming you're a guy here!). I love cufflinks but apparently they're only for weddings these days so a button cuff. Again, make sure it's not too loose around the neck, it make your head/neck look small.

So in short, keep it simple, classic and elegant. A good suit is an investment and most people end up looking crap because they overdo it. And for god's sake make sure it fits.

This is the kind of look I've always gone for (bar the horrible dbl-breasted monster):

The advice here is absolutely spot-on:

    • hey man thats awesome advice, and sorry i hadn't responded to your reply for my London question… i didn't subscribe to that thread!

i found that reply after stalking your other posts for similarly sage advice, how ironic.

    • Agree with everything this man has said except cufflinks. I wear cufflinks to work (as do most of my colleagues) and to expensive dinners (often happening after work). Ties are a must in the corporate workplace and we spend a fair bit to get something ridiculously simple (and elegant). Also rock a pocket square with my business attire. Mad men is definitely a reference. Results have been very good.

      • Thanks for that, it was really helpful. How many suits do you think I should have? It is a part-time role, I have 2 and I think that will be enough.

  • Good point that though… you really have to consider what everyone else wears too. If cufflinks and pocket squares are pretty common I'd go with the crowd. The CLONK CLONK CLONK noise you make when your cufflinks bash against the desk while you're typing gets pretty annoying after a while though!

Again, I quite enjoyed wearing ties but not up here in FNQ…
