Any idea where to buy kosher salt? Can't seem to find it in supermarkets woolies or coles

Kosher salt, is just coarse/rock salt
It's not actual "Kosher", it just the salt used for Kosher meat (i.e. removing the blood)
      https://www.sbs.com.au/food/article/2016/05/23/so-what-koshe…

The stuff in the piccy priced at $1.05 is the stuff. I use it for plain meat which I'm bbq'ing ew.g. steaks, roasts, etc as it sticks to the outside, draws out the moisture (so the meat doesn't stew & gives you better meat flavour, as there's less water & thus more meat flavour) and you get a nice salt crust when cooked.

Yea that’s what I was going to say as well thanks man you pretty much covered that question 😀 but mrtin if you’re still looking for the American stuff maybe Costco might have it they tend to House heaps of American products.

      • You're not quite right, Kosher salt is like fluffy table salt see picture here

        • There seems to be lots of conflicting information on the net. Some say rock salt is only used for ice-cream, some say it's the same as kosher.

        • @mrtin: The only FTA channel I watch at home is cooking network and all the American shows use kosher and it's definitely never been rock salt as for the most part they use it for seasoning and whole rock salt is the last thing you want use as it takes a while to dissolve.

        • @Brouw3r:
I agree with your comment but like I said there's so much conflicting info!

        • @mrtin: yeah it's a bit like organic or free range. the original meaning is being stretched due to commerical reasons & ignorance.

I use rock/coarse salt, but if it needs to be finer (e.g. the salt is for flavouring - something that kosher salt isn't for) then i use a salt grinder to break it down.

can I ask what you need kosher salt for?

        • @supabrudda: If they're trying to match American recipes calling for it, there's conversions online or go by taste, going by weight on kitchen scales for salt could be disastrous

        • @supabrudda:
Just because the recipe calls for it!

        • @mrtin: sorry I meant what kind of recipe. basically work out what the salt is for, (do you lay it in a bed of salt?, do you rub it in the outside, or do you just add it to cooking, like a spice), then if it's to flavour, use coarse salt (or even table salt really), if you're trying to draw moisture out, create a salt crust, etc then use rock salt.

        • @supabrudda:
          Cool thanks!

    • Kosher salt is just plain non-iodised salt without the anti-caking agents. It generally has a coarser grain size than table salt but is not as coarse as rock salt.

I would say just use rock salt, but lightly crush it with a mortar and pestle to get the same consistency.

  • Costco everyday low price $ 1.69 for 2 kg

    • Cool story bro.

    • I'll just drop in and buy some. Oh wait… it's miles away.

      • $60 for membership.
  • What's the use by date?

    • 18th of Jan 2020

    • Does salt actually go off?

      • .. like a frog in a sock!

      • In my experience salt does not go off if you keep it in a sealed container. If you expose it to air it can absorb odours and moisture. The moisture does not make it go off but it can make it cake if it does not contain an anti-caking agent. It is still useable.

    • Had to upvote. You probably workshopped that for hours.

Wish I had a kilo of salt at this equivalent price in 200 AD.

Eight grams of Gold would buy 2268 grams of Salt (about 5 pounds).

I kg of salt = approx. 36 grams of gold

    36 grams of gold = approx. $2000

    • If you had, you'd be dead for 1800 years. Your gold would be long gone.

  • Superb price!

  • Where's Bearosaurus to inform us that saxa spelled backwards is axas?

  • Another discussion
Do we need to eat regular salt or only Himalayan salt

I prefer organic free range Murray River salt for day to day.
But for special occasions I prefer salt extracted from the tears of OzBargainers who've paid full price for something on eBay.

      • You cruel, cruel soul!
