If you're really trying to drive for good sound quality at a low price, you can get Massdrop's stripped-down version of the Sennheiser Game One (the Sennheiser PC37x) for about the same price as this, shipped from the US.
Just keep in mind that the jump in audio quality comes from the Game One/PC37x's open-back design, and thus the audio can be heard by those in the same room as you.

Is it because these are being phased out/discontinued/replaced?
Yeah, their new gaming series is gonna replace this.
Is it the GSP series?
Yup. I do feel like you can do better. If you want my 2 cents, buy the Sony 7506 from one of the audio shops. It's stellar but no mic. You can get a mod mic if you really need later
As someone who bought a headset several years ago for about $45 (on sale), and has been very happy with the sound & build quality, can you really tell the difference besides overall weight after you go past $80 or $90 ??
I've had thermaltake and creative headsets and been very surprised by the audio quality I've gotten from them. That said, I have pretty good hearing (don't need to blast the volume or bass) and usually use them in quiet rooms (don't need to overcome or hear outside noise).
Sennheiser have been in the audio game for 60 years.
If you appreciate quality sound, you'll tell the difference. If you're not heavily into audio, then you will barely notice the difference.
