hey mate would it be possible that you do this with other more premium brands? Such as Tag, omega etc? THANKS :D

        • +2

Only if I find price reductions of at least 50%. I have already done 101 TISSOT 60 ORIS and 75 FREDERIQUE CONSTANT

        • @PJC:
Well done. Always nice to see a post from you.
          Thank you.
On the other side, has anyone had any issues with Amazon US customer service? How to deal with a faulty item?

        • @pal: You're welcome. Take your time with the list and at these prices you may find a suitable gift for someone. I don't have any relevant experience to share concerning Amazon US customer service.

  • +1

we must win the world cup

  • +4

Love the efforts as always PJC but does such continuous huge drops on RRP not devalue the reputation of the manufacturer? Looks like some amazing watches but this has just become the norm for these brands.

    • +11

Based on my understanding… Invicta watches aren't really the 'prestige' sort. They're equivalent to a departmental store watch brand.

    • Many watch brands adopt a similar pricing strategy. Invicta have been doing this for years. At these prices, some of them are worth considering.

  • +1

Any explanation as to why they're so much cheaper than RRP? Have minimal experience with watches, is it common to be able to buy them at these prices throughout the year or is this like a limited sale? thanks

    • +3

Certain watch brands do that, in that they will set a silly high RRP then just constantly sell the watches at 50% off etc.

    • +10

Invicta, Akribos and a stack of 'Eurasian' watch companies are notorious for this. Basically some low end chinese watchmakers bought the rights to some old swiss watch companies when they went broke. They now legally stamp the old watch company names onto their lower end watches quite legally. Some folks that dont know much about watches assume they are buying an exclusive high end swiss watch at a ridiculous discount. Much of the itme they are actually buying a cheap low end watch with an old brand name stamped on the face.

      • But Invicta is owned by the North Americans…

        • +1

Who have their watches made in chinese factories

        • There's a bit to wade through but there's some background here: http://www.watchfreeks.com/10-invicta/12294-history-invicta.…

        • it's why they changed "swiss made" designation for watches, even Seiko has Japanese assembled and chinese assembled watches …. I have swiss made Omegas and chinese assembled Invicta with Seiko movement, the Invicta is a great watch and as a winder as accurate as my Omega (might just be lucky batch) , but these watches don't claim to be an heirloom.

Swiss are feeling the pain / sales loss from smartwatches (eg apple watch) and wearable fitness devices (eg fitbit), so expect to see more watch brands offshored to china to keep viable products.

    • +1

Marketing gimmick. These watches literally never are listed for whatever bullshit RRP they say it is reduced from (e.g 400,500 so on) because they are simply not worth that money. They are essentially lying about the RRP to trick less knowledgeable people (the likely demographic buying these watches) into thinking they're getting a real steal.

      • so would you say some of these watches are worth purchasing at the price? I'm unaware of the quality of invicta watches, but for almost the same price as some of these you get a seiko 5 which I have experience with the quality.

        • +1

You'd get a Seiko any day of the week over these IMO…

        • +1

@Maz78: just had my first ever Seiko (5) watch delivered to me from the last sale that PJC posted, and I think I've fallen in love, the build quality and movement seem great to my untrained eye, probably because my other watches are all fashion watches (daniel wellington, Hugo Boss, Tommy hilfiger) to name a few

        • +1

@Maz78: Absolutely. I don't think i'd ever recommend something like an Invicta to anyone, and when you have the option of Seiko or another reputable brand that produces good quality watches / movements the choice is pretty clear for me.

    • Pricing strategy. Amazon recently reduced a lot of Invicta prices.

    • +7

Beside each watch is a FACTS link to Invicta's product page showing the RRP. US$41.28 is 89% off $US$395.

      • +5

If it's never sold at that price, then it's a misleading comparison, per the ACCC:
        https://www.accc.gov.au/business/pricing-surcharging/display…

Invicta are a brand that are normally sold at 75% discount or something of that order. I've never seen them full price. It sounds like Amazon may be doing the right thing by indicating the actual discount.

        • +8

What RRP do you see on the manufacturer's product page? I'm not misleading anybody. I'm following a Moderator's requirements. Invicta never consulted me about their pricing strategy. These are the lowest prices I could find.

        • +1

          @PJC:

The moderator’s requirements you refer to were for Seiko – where they do genuinely sell their watches at RRP, as with most manufacturers. Hence that guidance was appropriate.

As anyone familiar with watches knows, and others have stated in this post, Invicta watches are not sold at RRP – they are sold at typically 75% off.

As per the ACCC statement, it is misleading to claim the discount off RRP where the product is not actually genuinely sold at that price.

        • +1

          @odysseus:

The moderator’s requirements you refer to were for Seiko …

No, it was for future posts …

… and that would be appreciated if you could quote the % off as RRP for future posts

… I even amended that Seiko post accordingly and have shown % off RRP on my subsequent CITIZEN post and this one. You can see the RRP on Invicta's product pages.

        • @odysseus:

          To clarify:

          • If someone is mentioning % off in a title or description, most people will assume it % off the normal price. Normal = the price they were selling it previously or the normal price from that retailer.
          • If it's RRP, then that should be made explicit as RRP are made up numbers that most products never sell at (except Apple perhaps).

So in that example: Men's 8932 Pro Diver Collection Silver-Tone Watch. Camelx3 states that the current price is $33.99, previous price $52.99, highest ever $165.75. Never sold at $395. Still a good deal at 36% off but RRP is totally made up by the manufacturer to give the watch an inflated value.

While it's better to have the % off from the last price instead of RRP, we don't expect the OP to go check the history of 52 watches. As long as that info is conveyed, then all good from us.

        • +3

we don't expect the OP to go check the history of 52 watches

          But it’s PJC

        • +6

          @muncan:

He doesn't have time for that….

        • +3

@neil: I suppose it is time I bought another watch.

        • +1

          @neil:

In this case where the RRP is manifestly inaccurate and never used, then it is misleading as per ACCC to just use it.

Most products, including the previously mentioned Seiko and Citizen watches, are sold at RRP, though you can of course get reductions. I dispute that "RRP are made up numbers that most products never sell at."

The ACCC specifically highlighted this to cover scenarios like for Invicta.

        • +2

          @odysseus:

The ACCC only has powers for Australian retailers that advertise misleading prices. Amazon US/Jomashop etc sales would not be applicable.

        • in Australian watch shops the Invictas I've seem go for $250 ….. with amazon it's volume, and no GST or watch shop margins …. as trump says "amazon is killing mum and dad shop front retailers:.

RRP is bricks and mortar shops.

        • these are us prices ….. eg us rrp …… not sure if people think the ACCC will book a flight to the USA and do something about practices on american pricing.

  • +9

Invicta are notorious for inflating RRPs as a sales technique. Nobody, anywhere, ever has paid the RRP for an Invicta watch. With some exceptions, these are mostly cheapo chinese watches with an old swiss company name (that they bought when the original company went broke) stamped onto the face. Their actual worth is probably around the discount selling price. Probably OK watches for the price but dont think you are getting a Rolex or Omega equivalent for $100.

  • +4

    Haters gonna hate?

    • +15

What more can I do but type the truth? There's a FACTS link beside each watch. Amazon were previously selling most of these for higher prices. These are the lowest prices I could find for them.

      • +3

exactly! as always, job well done! love ya work

  • +3

I would not buy a watch anymore with a frequently replaceable battery.

They are costly and inconvenient to change, I now rock a Citizen Eco-Drive, fantastic. Sieko and others make their own version too.

    • +2

Takes less than two minutes to pop the back off a watch, replace the battery, and re-set it.

Using a $10 tool off eBay.

That said, Ecodrives are very handy!

      • +2

Unless you want it resealed for waterproofing, in my experience.

    • +1

Totally agree, only buy Swiss, German or Japanese Automatics, never need a battery

      • +1

Don't automatic watches require servicing every now and then (once every few years)?

        • Correct, typically every three years or so (varies per brand / movement).

        • Apparently but I am less than diligent with my watch servicing. Auto watches arent as accurate as Quartz regardless. I knew a guy that had an old Omega he bought in the 1960's and had never had it serviced. Still worked, maybe not as accurate as it could be.

        • +1

Don't automatic watches require servicing every now and then (once every few years)?

No, from what I have read Seiko auto's are known to run for around 20 to 25 years.

        • +1

older omegas were 3 year service interval ($350), new ones are 5 years ($500), I think Rolex is also 5 years ($700). They also change seals on crown, etc to ensure it remains water tight. My omegas go to the spa every 10 years for clean and lube.

They work even when not serviced , but for some the concerns are wear as the lubricants dry out, you can run a car for 50,000 on the same oil and it will still do 100kph, but it may not last 250,000kms which a car with regular oil changes does.

The quartz bonus is the need cheapness if a noew movement is needed, and to not have to wind or wear (autos have about 36 hr backup), just pick up and go …. Omega make seamaster as an auto and quartz version, I own one of each…. yes the quartz also costs more than some peoples first car.

      • Yes, but it's actually cheaper changing a battery on a quartz than servicing an automatic watch. I have both battery operated and automatic watches.

        • Much cheaper. If price is your only criteria, a digital casio from KMart or Big W will keep better time than a Rolex for literally a fraction of the price. On purely functional criteria one of the no name brand watches off eBay or Aliexpress would be the best bang for buck watches. People that buy Swiss Autos dont buy them for accuracy or price.

  • -1

lol to people who buy "watches" with batteries..

    • +1

yes, because they're cheaper and better at keeping time than the "watch" on your wrist that probably costs more than my first car.

    • +1

I don’t get this snobbish view point on watches. Automatics are great if you’ve got cash to burn, but there’s nothing wrong with a cheap quartz watch either. Both tell the time. Each has their own place.

      • +2

If you want a cheap watch dont buy an Automatic. They are less accurate, cost more to maintain and cost more to buy in the first place. If you want a cheap watch buy a Quartz. But buy it knowing it is a cheap watch, dont pay $300 for a Daniel Wellington, Armani or Hugo Boss watch thinking that somehow you are getting anything other than a $20 Casio with a a badge on the front. I know there are loads of Auto watches that use the same ETA or Sellita movements but generally there is a heritage and an after-market of collectors etc. If you are after a functional thing to wear on your wrist to tell the time…..and nothing more, buy a cheap Quartz watch. If you are interested in a watch as a piece of jewelry, perhaps with some retained after market value, from a traditional watchmaking company with some heritage, that other watch collectors would find interesting, buy a Swiss Auto.

    • +1

lol to people who buy "watches" with batteries..

I own some, why are you laughing at me?

The Casio MDV106-1AV and Skmei 1134 are two of my favourite watches.

  • +2

of course, but there are many automatics and mechanical watches around that don't break the bank. orient especially in the sub $200 mark

    • +1

I have some great Seiko Autos, Sumo, Monster and i would love one of the new Samurais!

    • +3

Lately I've been getting some great Glycine Auto deals off Massdrop. Genuine, original with worldwide warranty Swiss Automatics!

      • +1

        Glycine is a superb brand.

      • Same parent company as Invicta by the way.

        • +1

Correct, unfortunately but there was a backlash by Glycine fans and the CEO was quick to point out that the dodgy Invicta marketing strategies wouldn't be applied to the Glycine brand:

""Glycine will stay Glycine," says Glycine CEO Stephen Lack. "There are absolutely no intentions to have a mixture of the two brands. Glycine will stay a Swiss brand producing mainly automatic Swiss watches at a very attractive price point," he continued, insisting that since the two brands do not share target markets, there's no reason that their marketing or pricing strategies would be shared."

          Reference: https://www.ablogtowatch.com/invicta-acquires-glycine-watche…

        • @2ndeffort: I guess the original owners had to cash out. I reckon I would too. And just enjoy retirement.

        • @ltwo: Apparently until about 2014 it was still a family owned business. Cant blame them for cashing out!

    • -1

i'll assume you're replying to my comment above. To each their own, but i don't believe in paying extra for a watch that won't keep time as well as a decent quartz watch.

i could spend $200 buying an automatic watch which, due to mechanical limitations, will lose / gain 10 seconds a day, or i could spend less than $100 buying a decent quartz watch and won't have to worry about upsetting the delicate movements inside.

      • Ahhh …. people don't own auto for accuracy, it's because the second hand "sweeps" smoothly in typically 1/3 second intervals, quartz watches do 1 second sweep interval, so when I wear my auto it's appearance and the smooth sweep.

quartz watch with 1/3 second sweep battery would last 1/3 as long as a 1 second sweep, so they don't make them.

Next generation of people be more into wearable lifestyle …. my son love his fitbit …. won't swap it for a normal watch
Some smart watches also unlock your phone if within distance.

  • I wonder what ArchieLuxury (on youtube) thinks of Invicta?

    • Used to be a blogger called the watchsnob that paid out on anything short of A Lange & Sohne or Patek Phillipe, find him and ask him about Invicta.

  • +5

I'll post my experience with Invicta.

I bought a pro diver off Ozbargain. Looks the same as a Rolex. Great quality i can't fault it. It's nice and heavy.

Just after a year and warranty ended - it stopped working. I thought maybe the battery so took it to a watch place.

It was fully automatic and didn't need a battery so they didn't know why it wasn't working and without a rebuild they wouldn't know. A rebuild they quoted was around $250.

I checked another place and was quoted around $300 to repair it.

I looked on the Invicta website which is heaps dodgy. It was like $80 us just to send it to invicta and would take months to get back.

Luckily i checked a cheap battery replacement shop…the guy tested it…said it has power but no idea why not working. Probably dust in the gear he said. Fix it for $30.

Worked for a week then stopped again. Took it back and got it working.

The guy said they look good but he doesn't think they are properly sealed - had heaps that get water and dust inside the gears.

Anyway that was a year ago it's been working fine since.

One other thing i've noticed - if you don't wear it for around a day it will lose time. I have a Tag Heuer and that keeps time for around a week without wearing it.

    Anyway thats my experience

Fair enough. I'm glad it's working again. Not even a rich moron in a hurry would pay RRP for these.

I bought an invicta watch years ago, still chugging along fine and still looks new. My son wears it mostly.

Have to laugh though , Pro Diver ( not suitable for diving)

    • +2

Yes, that really is what they call them. I'm surprised USA permits that.

      • +1

For the price they are a bargain.

        • True, and these are the lowest prices I could find.

    • yeah prodiver ….. only the auto has screw down crown, the quartz divers are push down, I've dived with the auto, no issues, I haven't bought an invicta quartz as the screw down crown on the auto in their price point is a feature for me.

      • Can I ask a dumb question?

Can I leave a auto watch with my dive gear for months or years at a time, then when I want to use it set the time and it'll be good to go?

Or do auto watches expect to get used daily?

        • Can I leave a auto watch with my dive gear for months or years at a time, then when I want to use it set the time and it'll be good to go?

That is basically true; their power reserve usually averages 48 hours, and that's not a dumb question.

Thanks PJC! was waiting for this, am going to try to Mod one of the divers watches…this is a great price for first time modders!

    • You're welcome.

  • Thanks OP. Great post and some tempting designs in there!

Thanks PJC! Something about that 23084 is speaking to me and I really don't need another watch…

    • +1

By the power vested in me it is my solemn duty to hereby absolve you of all blame and any residual guilt concerning the essential acquisition of this S1 Rally Chronograph 23084.

  • Fantastic work PJC and with the dual links ……. awesome

    • You're welcome. Take your time and you'll probably find something suitable for you.

What's better? Invicta or the Fossil crap that they sell for $300?

    • +2

In my opinion Invicta is better value, especially in the above list, and the quality is about the same.

      • +2

Totally agree, if you accept that the Invictas are worth about the value of their discounted price and not the inflated RRP that they claim then the invictas are probably the better deal.

Good job PJC. Even though these watches are not for me, I still prefer people like you who one day help me to get a awesome watch. Cheers.

    • You're welcome.

  • I'm waiting for an OutVicta! Because then it'll work as replacement parts for my lawn mower too.

    • Some of these watches are nearly big enough for that. I got a $199 Victa Sabre in BigW and it gave me nearly 8 years service before it died. Excellent bargain.

  • +2

Why are people complaining? You didn't do this, price is too this/too that.

Straight up, thanks PJC - really appreciate the effort you went to listing all of these watches.

I have an Invicta 2770 and it's been great (my favourite watch ever), but finally has a bit of chipped glass (I'm always banging into things - unintentionally - and it's survived a lot) - so I'm looking at getting a 1517, which you don't have listed here, but I still really appreciate the effort you've gone to. I'll just keep waiting for it to go on special.

    Cheers mate.

    • You're welcome. Consider this.

Thanks. I've been watching it on Amazon (sorry - unintentional bad pun) and it's about the same price. Was $20-something cheaper, in November last year, so I'm hoping it will go back down again.

      • Far out. I decided to go with the 23080: added it to my cart, went to pay and the price changed back (and it was removed from my cart to "saved for later"). No longer on special :(

        • Amazon listings can change quickly. At least 3 watch prices rose dramatically while I compiled the list, so I halted at 52.
