Looking for Gaming monitor for my laptop

I have an omen laptop I bought last year. Have been playing a lot of Pverwatch competitive. However the built in screen is 60Hz. I’m feeling it’s holding me back in big team fights. Looking for a value for money 144Hz monitor. I’m considering waiting for the omen 25 screen to come on sale as everything I have is currently omen - laptop, mouse, keyboard and mousemat.

From what I understand Gsync or freesync would be desirable?

Appreciate any suggestions you guys have. I don’t know a lot about these screen.

If you dont know much about screens, how do you know 60hz is the main factor that is holding you back?

    What are your laptop specs?
It can be the GPU is lacking performance hence causing the latency issues and not your screen.

You'll need at least a GTX 1050 Ti to get 100+ FPS. There may be no point in getting a high refresh rate monitor unless you have a fast GPU to support it.

Gsync monitors are pretty pricey and they also require an Nvidia GPU. Freesync is an AMD thing and Nvidia doesn't officially support it in it's drivers.

You should turn on the FPS counter in the game (easiest way would be to turn it on in the Steam settings, this works with non-steam games if you add the it to your library and launch the game through steam) and see if you are maxing out at 60Hz. Laptop specs and current monitor specs would help in this discussion.

  • For the record this is my laptop and it’s specs. Should be definitely capable of exceeding 60FPS.

It Maxs at 60Hz most of the time. There does seem to be increased latency is big team fights though. Almost that it skips frames

      Have you tried
      a) playing while connected via Ethernet directly to your router
      b) using an ordinary monitor (doesn't have to be +60hz, but preferably something that has low input lag, so avoid using the TV.
      c) updating GPU drivers?

Also, enable the FPS counter in the settings and turn off the 60fps lock (no Vsync) (that is, allow the game to run at more than your monitor's native refresh rate). That way you can judge how much performance you're getting during testing.

      • 1) haven’t tried Ethernet yet, I’ll give it a go. My ping sits around 50. (I’m in Perth)
        2) I don’t own another monitor, but possibly it would be worth trialling.
        3) drivers up to date

        4) I have the FPS counter enabled. I’ve got it locked to maximum monitor will allow, I’ll change it to 300 and see what happens. I imagine Vsync is on too, so I’ll see if that can be turned off. It usually sits at 60 most of the time though.

        • It usually sits at 60 most of the time though.

Turn your settings (such as anti-aliasing, filtering or shadow, fog & lighting effects) down until you are able to hit 100~ FPS at least 99 percent of the time (that's before you consider getting a 144hz display).\ See this guide for explanation for what all the settings do

If you really want a 'great' competitive experience you're going to want to always stay above 60fps.

Playing online games on Wifi generally means you have a pretty big disadvantage as well, as any packet loss results in you missing some of the action.

        • @scrimshaw:

          I can’t hit 100fps because my screen limt is 60FPS (60HZ).

I will have a play with the settings anyway :) cheers

        • @scrimshaw:

Did some fiddling with settings. My FPS is sitting around 120 consistently on the settings i usually play on. :)

@Danta: Not a monitor suggestion, but I would recommend keeping the frame rate unlocked anyway. Even if the monitor can only display at 60hz, the game running at a higher framerate in the background means your inputs and responses are being updated more frequently, and you're more likely to displayed a frame closer to your last action. That's the reason a lot of CS:GO players try get upwards of 300fps even when they're only on 120hz monitors.

You'll probably notice an increase in control during fights even without a monitor update.

        • @enceladus94:

Yeah I definitely noticed an improvement when playing last night :)

Do you feel it is laggy, I was playing on 75hz and upgraded to 144hz, it was such a huge difference, buttery smooth, did it make me a better player, no.

Also one thing you should know about jumping on 144hz, you can't go back to 60, it just looks horrible, especially in fps, one thing to keep in mind, if your gaming on your laptop

    • Yeah I do feel it’s laggy at times.

I am gaming on the laptop but the thought is that I’d be using the new monitor for FPS :)

      Cheers for your input

    • I use a 75Hz monitor at the moment, would you say the 144Hz would be worth it? Mainly FPS, but I'm sure not how much of a difference it'll make.

Makes a huge experience, is definitely worth, one thing to keep in mind though, need a beefy gpu to constantly push 144fps, also need to consider that once u get used to 144hz, you can't game at 60hz anymore, it just looks horrible

  • May I ask what your budget is?

    • $500 Max

This one will suit your needs:

If you can deal with no Gsync then:

G sync is really good if you play anything at frame rates less than 144Hz. For extremely competitive games like Rainbow Six Siege, CS GO, LoL alike you can't use g-sync. The input lag is too much if your frame rates hit the ceiling. V-sync must always be disabled and its best to even disable ULMB since higher frame rates beat everything. The Acer has an advantage of 180 Hz overclock but I doubt you can push that far up but the good thing is you can use the monitor later if you build a PC and reap the benefits.

Now as for the seller, I personally would recommend PC Case Gear, they have excellent warranty and return service. I have used it a few times myself and you are free to check them out. But thats your personal preference.

24" is gonna be good for almost all game genres since the screen is small that it gives you an advantage over a person with 27" as you can see the UI clearly without turning your head in competitive.

The resolution for both these is 1920 x 1080 which is perfect for your laptops GPU as well for properly scaling the windows and game UI. 1440p is sometimes a bit glitchy and 4k is out of the question.

Both the monitors contain TN panels which will have good response times but not amazing picture colours. If you are gonna game primarily then you should be fine.

Lastly the Acer has a confusing settings menu but it has all the features. BenQ is more user friendly but I doubt this is of much significance. Hope this info helps you, cheers

Thanks a lot, this is the sort of insights I was looking for :).

I was looking at the omen 25 for approx $400. But for the extra $100 to have gsync seems like a no brainer. + as you say you have overclock if I get a desktop etc down the track :)

          Cheers
