Have recently bought Black Decker Drill, Impact Driver combo.

Now, need to buy a cheap & good drill bit set for my current & future DIY projects. Please suggest me options. Also please remember this is not my regular job. Need to finish my home jobs like Curtain rod installation, Shelves & few more basic wood projects.

Thanks all Ozbargainers :)

Used a range of drill bits over the years. Main annoyance is not having the right size bit. I found a set of 9 drill bits in a handy round container recently at Bunnings for $5 and they work brilliantly. You can get them in HSS and masonry. So look for a set of each to get you started. For the DIY there is no need to go out spending a fortune on expensive individual bits.

Also I bought a great Makita drill bit set in a case ages ago which had an assortment of handy bits like chucks, extensions, socket adaptors, counter sinks. I love this case set as a quick go to. It also had screwdriver bits. Make sure you get these in different sizes. Most handy and used attachment for the drill.

    Yes and no.

Perhaps buy a cheap large set so you have plenty of sizes on hand. As you use them you will consume/destroy the cheapies, so replace the most often used sizes with good quality individual bits that will last. You will eventually burn through the cheap set and have a collection of good quality bits suitable for your most common needs that will last a long time.

    • I like this idea. I have a cheap drill bit set - Aldi cheap. It covers a massive range of sizes and wood, metal, masonry and hole saws. The wood ones are OK for soft wood. The metal ones will cut one or two good holes before going blunt and the masonry bits seem OK for my very limited use. I've replaced some of the metal bits with quality in the sizes I need and overall I think that has worked. The small bits broke fairly easily, so I need some more replacements for them.

Buy cheap buy twice, but for light DIY usage cheap will often do the job for a reasonable period of time.
