ADSL Unlimited Broadband: $59/M Bundled (City Rates) - No Contract or Setup Fees (+ $10/M after 6 Months) @ Mate Communicate

80

There are no real ADSL bargains out there but if you had to choose one, I think this would be the closest in terms of cost, contract and ISP reputation. If you have an active phone line on the Telstra network and need ADSL and phone line rental, don't want to pay any setup fees or be locked into any contracts and are in the metro area, this may interest you.

City Mates ADSL Unlimited Bundle

  • $59 / month (first 6 months then it goes up to $69)
  • Includes line rental and ADSL all on the Telstra network
  • Unlimited local & national calls within Oz
  • $0 setup
  • Unlimited data
  • Free NBN transition (continue month to month contract)

Regional rates are also available at $89/m (+$10 after 6 months) but I believe they are not as competitive as other providers, however no contract and no setup fee may be worth it.

Mate Communicate is a well reviewed provider and is popular on Whirlpool forums.

Still a sorry sod with no NBN in sight, I recently churned over to Mate after Telstra put my ADSL2+ bundle connection up from $80 to $100 month. For me, the phone and internet service is exactly the same and speeds are on average higher. The churn went through quickly and communication from mate was excellent via SMS and email.

How does this compare with some other ADSL providers offering a similar plan?

Leaptel ADSL Bundle Unlimited Month to Month

  • $69.95/m (On-Net) or $89.95 (Off-Net)
  • Includes phone line
  • Calls charged at standard rates
  • $90 setup fee (Same as churn fee?)
  • Transition fee over to NBN ??

TPG ADSL Home Bundle (On-Net) Unlimited Month to Month

  • $59.99/m (On-Net)
  • Includes phone line
  • Calls charged at standard rates (or add a $10 VOIP add-on allowing unlimited national calls)
  • $0 churn setup fee + $20 Prepayment
  • $99.95 fee for transitioning to NBN Bundle (No lock-in contract)

TPG 0ff-net plan exists at maximum 500GB standalone plan starting at $99.99 / month.

Dodo ADSL Bundle Unlimited Month to Month

  • $69.90/m ($99.90/m Regional)
  • Includes phone line
  • Calls charged at standard rates
  • $29 setup fee
  • Transition fee over to NBN ??

Again, not an overly exciting offer and maybe better suited to the forums but possibly it will help those looking for a reputable ISP with no contract at the lowest cost. Seen a better deal? Post it below!

Cheers.

(profanity)… why is ADSL so expensive?

    • Because, mates rates…

      • Why don't people use Optus 200GB Month to month mobile broadband for $70/m?
Who needs unlimited data? I don't use more than 100GB, or 150 Max.

    • Thank Tony and Malcolm. What percentage of Australia would have the FTTH NBN now if they didn't win the last election?

      • -1

I'm considering migrating to another country just because of the sh*t net here

      • -3

How is that Tony and Malcolm's fault?
The blunder was a huge mess that the Labors jumped on without a clue.
        Nice try Shorten

Yep, I'm paying $70/month for TPG ADSL, completely sucks! Cannot wait until the day NBN is available, the plans are so much more competitive.

    • Think of huge corporations that take their eternal toll as an unjustified expensive line rental forever!
I am sure they received the cost of their infrastructure at the end of the first year but who does not want free money flowing in till eternity?

  • That's very good value, probably the lowest price ever in Australia, even if only temporarily. Something to consider…

If someone does sign up, maybe PM OP for his name and account number, as there seems to be a referral system: http://whrl.pl/Re6OhZ
Although unsure if this style of referral is okay by their terms or not.

  • I’ve been on adsl 2+ with dodo for a few years paying $90 a month nbn was due to be connected this month but has now been delayed until mid June☹️

    • I am with Dodo too and paying $65/month.

Spintel are offeeing $55/month (https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Providers/SpinTel/AD…) , so I am thinking of switching to them. From whistle out there is no upfront cost from having a month to month contract.

However, I am ot sure how good their service is!

NBN isnt due until January - June 2019 in my area.

      • I am in regional Victoria don’t know how they can justify the price compared to those in the city.

      • I wouldn't touch spintel ever again, they are terrible at provisioning enough bandwidth, I was with them for a few years and their internet shouldn't have been legal. If you look at the google video quality report for Melbourne for e.g. on the percentage chart, you can see a noticeable dip in peak times (although looks much better than it used to). Brisbane used to look atrocious with many users unable to even stream SD video at peak times. Garbage ISP with the most horrible international throttled speeds. Couldn't even stream google music without the music cutting out, no line fault.

        • Maybe I won't switch then!

        • @UNO:

My parents have been with them for about 8 years now, I set them up on it and they are still with them. They have been fine if you ask me, have had issues in the past, but their customer service isn’t too bad in dealing with it. Check out the referral if you choose to change, TPG are pretty good too for a lower price

Makes zero sense that ADSL is more expensive than nbn…

  • ADSL is more expensive because it is superior to NBN in every way thanks to the Australian governments brilliant decision to invest in an already outdated technology called the NBN

No different to the Trump government to be honest

  • MyRepublic has good ADSL for what you actually get from ADSL. Unlimited is standard.

    • Myrepublic are also liars and idiots. Changed our nbn connections from MR to Mate.

    Im taking this up.

Telstra recently raised my ADSL2+ by $10/month taking it to a total $100.

Screw you Telstra. WE dont even use the damn phone line you crooks

    • True
I think it was fair to initially charge for their investment and infrastructure at the beginning but its way too expensive as a long ongoing cost. Maybe $2-3 per month would be more realistic. Especially now that they have already made a fortune hundreds folds than the initial cost and the ADSL/copper line is phasing out.
Also I am guessing they make an easy money from resellers than dealing directly with customers. That could explain the hike.

  • Looks interesting..Any adsl modem deals or suggestion. BYO modem never hurts.

      Maybe the TP-Link TD-W8960N for just ADSL @ $34

Check Gumtree. I found mine for $20. Going strong for 2+ years now.

    Advise needed!

I'm new in Oz, just moved into a rental property. Not sure if the phone port is actually working, I assume it does.

Do I need to pay for any connection fees if I sign up to this plan? Thanks.

    • +1

You would need to pay the $59 (up to $299 it it is the first connection at that address) connection fee to Telstra if you're on an ADSL line. I just moved myself and am tossing up whether or not to pay it since I am scheduled to get the NBN (HFC) here sometime next month. As far as I know there is no connection fee on the NBN network (except the $300 one for new developments).

      • +1

Nbn is not here until mid 2019, so I decide to give it a go. Paid 59 for connection fee.

        Thanks.

        • +1

I will be going that route myself since I have heard too many horror stories about HFC delays.
