Lots of people aren't happy about the developer making this program Windows Store only, but I think this is a fair price for good software that is very well supported.

"FileBot is the ultimate tool for organizing and renaming Movies, TV Shows, Anime or Music. It's smart, highly customizable, and just works. If you're using HTPC software like Plex or Kodi then FileBot is a must-have utility!"

I've used the FREE "Bulk Rename Utility" for several years. Does everything I want from simply bulk renames to fancier stuff like replacing x with y and inserting text or removing the first x chars or last chars etc etc. Pretty powerful little tool, I've tackled it with tens of thousands of files in multiple subfolders containing ~10TB of data before over the network. It has done everything I asked, even has an undo option for those occasions you just messed up the names of hundreds (or more) files :)

That said, if this is better? I'll take a look.

EDIT: Super quick glimpse, my free alternative above looks better unless I'm missing the power of this particular fb app. I'll stick with what I have for now.

Tip: Press F2 on a selected file(s) to rename. Saves a few seconds of mouse clicking and the inaccuracy of cursor movement thourgh then menu.

TheRenamer is entirely free, and works perfectly. Been using it for years without issue. Can rename files, automatically sort them into folders, can set naming conventions to suit Plex/Kodi etc.

    • I was about to point the same thing, I have a FileBot docker container that just works without any payment necessary.

    • Looks like a pretty good free alternative. Grim UX though haha but I guess functionality is what matters

The renamer is so much better than filebot. The auto move feature to my NAS is perfect.

Looked for an alternative after Filebot started charging and so glad I found the renamer

Got to say that therenamer is just as good so long as you are just renaming your files.
Filebot is amazing for how you can customize it to what you want. I've got it checking for all my missing episodes then passing them to another program. I've also got it sorting all my photos into date order, and all my music into certain folders depending on genre.

If you are only using it for the TV show and movie renaming it's not worth it, but if you take full advantage of the program I'd say it definitely is.

Also Linux is still free but I donate to him instead because I really enjoy using his program :)

    • Can the renamer move files from folder to folder within the nas ?

      • +2

Yes it can. You can tell it to rename into folders for example

        Silicon Valley
        Season 5
        Episode 1

Then you set the destination folder to the nas

  • This is really good for finding subtitles.

  • Media Center Master is a pretty decent free alternative.

    • hey thanks will try and compare with filebot

    people got misunderstanding.
this is to FIND and then bulk RENAME your movie tv show anime collections and GET SUBTITLES.
not just bulk renaming any files. it cant insert or delete characters for example, but:

    • you download whole episodes of GoT season 1-5 for example, all has weird naming as they come from different sources
    • drag them all to filebot, in just 10 seconds, woalah, it got sorted with correct season number, episode number and episode name, for example Game of Throne (2017) - S01E08 - Meaningless Fight.
    • drag them all to filebot, and magic! they found the subtitle - if available on internet of course (you can choose english, french, arabic, etc), and rename them all automatically to match the corresponding movie file names above.

imagine doing those one by one manually for 20 different tv shows total 600 files.

i think the developer is a guy from Taiwan. very smart.
used to be free but i think the latest version is not so dont upgrade keep using the old ones. working fine for me.

    • Oh the subtitles thing sounds very handy. I barely watch my pirated shows any more because I love the subtitle option on Netflix so much. I know I can source subtitles from the webs but it's a extra manual step which is a pain. Thanks for the info.

yes try it you will be like "holy cow cant believe there is such a software like this"
you can drag drop like 30 (i dont know the limit could be 100) movies/tv shows/anime from DIFFERENT SHOWS AS WELL! means you can mix game of throne, flash, naruto, etc, press ONE button and it will find the subs for you. thats it. just select all, drag drop and ONE button to press.

        • Thanks, will take your recommendation and give it a go, via the sourceforge link above

  • I just use it for free on my Ubuntu partition, but thats the only reason I boot into Ubuntu atm lol

  • http://www.therenamer.com/ as others have said, free and powerful!

  • This is actually free on GitHub. Silly people paying for it.

  • Ive been using this for years. doesnt miss a beat
