  • Anyone had prior experience with OVH?

    • Would be keen to hear also. Looking for some alt to Azure VMs which are slow and expensive, but im wondering if these are actually too cheap to be decent quality.

      • Nevermind, seems you can only choose Linux.

        • They're KVM so you can install Windows.

Just boot it into rescue mode.

There's a few guides around to install Windows - https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/112860/howto-install-w…

        • Thanks mate but I cbf'ed. I want to be able to select Windows Server and they do the deployment at their end. Interestingly their link to OVH VPS operating systems includes Windows Server but you certainly cant select it on the systems above.

I signed up just last week (Sydney VPS) and so far the experience has been good.

Signup was more painful than I'm used to - new accounts require manual verification which took about 9 hours (signed up at 3pm, activated at almost midnight). Mildly frustrating in an era when users are used to cloud things being instant but I also understand their fraud concerns.

Network is great. From what I can tell:

      • Domestic transit via Telstra (looks to be all Telstra, I can't find any Optus or AAPT handovers)
      • Peered at IX Australia, seem to be at every location
      • International via mix of Telstra and their own network

International to US/EU is impressive. Can pull 50-100Mbps on a single TCP stream from one of my boxes in Germany.

However, routes to Asia are all over the place. Latency to some hosts in JP, SG, CN are upwards of 300ms, some over 400ms which suggests they are routing via the US.

Edit to add: overall I am happy for the price. I acknowledge they are new to Sydney and expect that routing will improve with time. They actually have a mailing list for the Sydney DC which is interesting to see.

      • Hi goosmurf. Sorry to hear about the delay in processing your payment. This normally occurs when our billing system detects a discrepancy with the payment details. For example, errors in the credit card details, or the IP address is behind a proxy. To ensure no fraudulent activity occurs, we sometimes have to resort to a manual verification process.

Regardless, we apologise for the delay, and thank you for your feedback.

the best of budget hosting, this deal is easily the best value in australia

  • gee the post is misleading. $3/month mentioned in title, but the 4 core one described is $26/month

    • Hi. Apologies for any confusion, we certainly don't want to mislead the community. I will update the post to specify the offer is "starting from $3.30 per month". Also, the specifications state the maximum no. of cores you can configure for this VPS range.

  • FYI, the $3.30/m will only get you:

    1 vCore(s)
    3.5 GHz
    1 GB RAM
    30 GB SSD
    1 TB Traffic

also, not sure if this is recurring for lifetime or just a one-off discount.

    • Hi @r0xz,
We brought additional clarity in the post too.
The 50% discount applies on the first 12-month commitment period.
      Thanks

  • I have the third one. Is this for new vps only

    • Yes, the offer is applicable to new VPS services.

      • hi, i am totally new to VPS, and interested to give it a go. is it hard to install windows into the vps? windows 2012 or any other windows?
is 1 gb ram enough for a website and webshost?

        • Hi ghandi28152. Windows is not supported at this time. We are working on bringing our VPS Cloud range to Australia and Singapore datacentres, so for now you will have to install a Linux OS, which is free. As for hosting requirements, that depends on the application you want to host, as well as the amount of traffic you expect.

  • What about server promotions?

    • +1

      Hi @Sunnyc,
Are you referring to Dedicated Servers?
      If so, stay tune, we are working on something (-;

  • been waiting for another one of these offers.. the 1gb ram vps i got last time just isn't enough for serving email and cmfl at the same time, happy days

    • I don't know what cmfl is but running mail server require bugger all memory.

      • Howdy! I assume CFML is ColdFusion Markup Language. Guberstank, what mail server do you plan to run on the VPS? Our entire range is discounted, so the options with higher RAM are still very affordable. Let me know if I can assist in any way.

      • yeah mail takes SFA but for instant processing with spam assassin and clamAV you are looking at a decent chuck of memory on demand, as much as 250mb, which is just too much with a decent coldfusion app on a 1gb vps, eventually it'll start swapping out.. at any rate ordered a 2gb vm now so all good, i have other plans for the 1gb vm muahahahaha

  • hi OP, had aked you 3 days ago, but no reply. can you kindly advise when you read this

    • Hi! Sincere apologies for missing your comment last time. The straight answer is that our discounted VPS SSD range does not support Windows at this time. We are currently working on bringing the OVH Cloud products to our Australia and Singapore datacentres, and following that milestone Windows will become available for the VPS Cloud range of servers. Until then, you can check out the European OVH VPS Cloud range, which supports seamless installation of Windows through the Control Panel.

Let me know if I may be of further assistance.

  • Anyway of trialling this before i sign up to a 12m service ?

  • so pay a month full price - then get the 12m at half price ?

    • Yes, you may create a first order for one month.
then you will have to order another VPS for 12 months to get the discount.
Make sure to request a cancellation of your first VPS (in your control panel) so it does not auto-renew after the first month.
Feel free to contact our support if you need further assistance.
      Thank you
