Private Health Cover Dateline Is Approaching. Dateline 31-March-2018

It's the time of the year again…….
We are with Medibank and had received Reminder about change to your premium on 1 April 2018
To save us $300 plus, would need to pay upfront over 5 grand!
We asked why the increase is over 3%. The reply was that there are others who have a reduction whilst some had an increase.
Love to know who's got a reduction!

Anyway, just a kind reminder to this Community to assess your private insurance now….

  • My mum was with Medibank too (Corporate Top Hospital) and received the new premium of $1613 PA.
    - Did an online quote as a new customer for the best cover using my mum's credentials - Complete Hospital.
    - Quote was $1540 PA which is cheaper (and higher level of cover) than the premium my mum received.
    - Obviously as many insurance companies' pracitces, they look after new sign-ups and rip off existing "loyalty tax"
    - Got a quote from Frank Health Best Cover ~ $1449 PA
    - Changed over to Frank and gave Medibank the boot.
    - After the changeover Medibank called my mum to ask why changeover. Gave the obvious reason.
    - For some mysterious and unexplained reason, they can always do better with their premiums after the fact!
    - They gave us a number to call to see what they can do.
    - Too late … beat it!

Medibank has the worst number of complaints and terrible reviews.
I was with them too and I had to get the Ombudsman involved just to get a partial refund as I left them early LOL .. and it took 8 Weeks for me to receive.

    Good riddance … Medifail!

just do some research, check if you taxable income is over the threshold or not, then decide if you really need hospital cover. unless you are over 60 years old i think we can save lots of $$$ by not taking hospital cover.
and avoid medibank they are the most expensive ones.

  • If you lose your job and dont need health insurance anymore for tax purposes can you cancel the insurance and get a refund of the premiums that you prepaid?

    • Yes. You are entitled to a refund from the date you cancel.
However, note that if you have received $90K+ YTD from the day you lose you job in the financial year 2017 - 2018

The real answer is that according to their dynamic pricing algo you aren't likely to leave if they increase the cost to you.

  • Looking for cousins family.
Any recommendations? They are paying $35 a fortnight ATM with 70% back. They are only want extras.

Family one is over 50 and other is over 40.
