Travel Insurance Wanted for Connecting Flight with 3 Hour Gap

I'm trying to find a travel insurance company that would insure me, I'm looking a a flight from Darwin to Singapore that leaves at 6am and gets into Singapore with Jetstar at 9:05am and then I board a plane from Singapore from Scoot to Taipei from 12:15pm that same day.

My question here is, if Jetstar has issues with their plane and is not able to get into Singapore by 11am instead as the check in counters will close an hour before leaving, does any one know of an travel insurance company that will cover me for this time period to book new tickets into Taipei?

I've rang like 5 travel insurance companies so far and most so I needed to leave like a 6 or 12 hour gap which I thought is a little too long, I travelling without bags all carry on luggage, the reason to book this is not spend like 6 or 7 hours in Singapore to get to the next trip to Taipei.

Thoughts?

Thank you

Sorry I don't know if there is travel insurance that would cover this. It's a risk many take when booking different airlines to get to their destination.

However, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Even if you had insurance you would most likely have to pay an excess and go through the hassle of claiming.

If you did happen to miss your connection there are still plenty of fairly cheap flights you can book to Taiwan at short notice. Eg. There are flights leaving tomorrow 27 March from Singapore to Taiwan for just over $100. Singapore airport is also not too bad a place to hang out at. :)

One thing to check is what terminals the planes arrive at and depart from at Singapore airport. Scoot probably departs Terminal 2, not sure about Jetstar.

    • I just rang Scoot and they said that I would just have to talk to the ground staff if I miss my flights and pay for a fare difference in cost but like the next flight out is in 12 hours time instead, do you think landing in from Singapore at 9:05am till 12:15pm leaving to Taipei is enough time to clear customs? I think Jetstar lands at T1 and Scoot leave at T2? Thanks

You won't need to clear customs in Singapore, so if your first flight arrives on time you should have plenty of time to get to the next Terminal (they are all interconnected, and you don't have baggage to collect / check-in).
Having said that, I have never flown Scoot and I am assuming that you can check-in for that flight either online or within the terminal itself.

We have also been through Customs (out and back in) at SG whilst transiting, and they are very efficient.

        • and you don't have baggage to collect / check-in).

Are the jetstar and scoot flights part of the same reservation?

I have interpreted no they're not, so normally they would need to collect baggage and check it in again.

What you can do is ask Jetstar if they can check your baggage through. They definitely can, but don't know if they will. Earlier in the month, Virgin checked through my baggage to Thai airways even though these were different tickets and different airlines.

        • @R-Man: OP stated "I travelling without bags all carry on luggage".

        • @GG57: oh!! thank you. Wasn't paying enough attention.

        • @R-Man:

Yeah I booked it via Flight Centre, I was wondering since there no reason to get out of customers do you think or know if Scoot has an office past the customs area? I'll be interested in knowing as if there no need to go through customs then a better option.

Did you ask Flight Centre since that's who you booked with? It's their job to help customers with bookings.

There is a transfer counter in T2 transit area but not all passengers are eligible to use it to get a boarding pass. You'll have to ask Scoot or Flight Centre if you need to clear arrivals immigration first and therefore check-in land-side, or if you can use the transfer counter in T2 transit area.

Your connection allows enough time to clear immigration and check-in land-side. Even if the plane is up to an hour late you should still have time to check-in although it will be tight. Just make sure you have a plan on how you are going to get from T1 to T2 quickly.

    • Eg. There are flights leaving tomorrow 27 March from Singapore to Taiwan for just over $100

Using this info, my recommendation is self-insurance: $0 your insurance premium and the $100 or so replacement ticket/change fee is your excess.

I have been in your situation in Los Angeles, transferring to a domestic JetBlue flight. JetBlue allows same day flight change in case of missed flight for a fee of $50 usd per person. So, we all put aside $50 as our excess.

I am not sure about this one!, however insurance offered for this situation appears difficult. I looked into flight delays for myself, on reading the insurance PDA notes it appears to say in instances of flight delays - take it up directly with the offending airline, compensation is in their hands. In the case of two flights with the SAME airline I think you would have a claim on them to deliver on the flight's booked.

With a MIXED flight schedule that is much more of a grey area. The first would say we got you there - end of contractural arrangements. The second would say you failed to turn up on time, your problem!!.

  • gets into Singapore with Jetstar at 9:05am

Have you checked prices and schedules for other airlines? If theres only a small price difference, I'd take a full service airline to try and minimise the risk of delays.

    • Yes we check others already but we wanted to take the Scoot because of the good time it gets to Taiwan.
