Double Mattress Recommendations

I am looking to purchase a double mattress, and are after recommendations.

I understand mattresses are important, with humans spending a fair amount of their lives on one. As such, I am happy to spend on a good quality one, but am not sure how much should I budget for to get a good quality one?

From memory, I purchased a Sealy branded mattress about 10 years ago for $500. Would that be a fair amount to spend?

Also, how many OzBargainers here have Ikea mattresses? How do you rate them?

Thank you in advance!

  • check out the range at IKEA. Good value for money and comfortable. We bought a Queen pocket spring with memory foam layer for $500. As mattress comfort and needs are quite subjective, you can spend $200 - $10,000. Lots of hype about memory foam mattresses like Koala, however i found them to be too soft.

    Overall, I wouldn't spend more than $1200.

    • Thank you for your response. It's good to hear good things about Ikea mattresses. I would like to purchase from Ikea if possible as I have a Ikea gift card I'd like to use.

      • I'd recommend if you do get an ikea mattress that you firm up the frame (if you get an ikea frame). I find that the damn slats they use creak and bend and often it feels like riding on the ocean waves.

    • Ikea mattresses are not standard australian sizes they are europeon sizing. Not sure how far off double is but king size is really different.

We've got our last few mattresses from Regal and they are fantastic. Negotiate on price, they usually have some wiggle room.

    I too was looking.

    Went to HN & Regal.

Regal wanted to flog off a King Sized mattress worth $6K but for me however as they said that I am an extremely valuable and very important customer, I can get it for $3.8K + delivery.

But then, I read the reviews, did some research and got this in a King Sized for a measly price ~ $350 delivered (Tenth of the retailers) from ZZZ Atelier.

Comparing both Regal and ZZZ beds, the Regal was slightly better. But not $3K better!

121 people can't be wrong! (Unless there are 121 employees of the company that provided their honest opinions LOL)

    Cheers

    • You must have missed the dr bum post

  • I bought a zzz and highly recommend it

  • zzz

  • Another zzz purchaser here. Just got mine a few weeks back and decided on this as for $300 my bet was if it was bad then off to the spare room. However if it was better than the one being replace then all good.

We got a Queen and are very happy with the purchase. Found it to be very comfortable and for the amount paid a bargain compared to local retail stores.

Using king coil atm, not bad, spent around $1000

On another note, are you getting double because you have a double frame? Considering upsizing to a queen, so much easier to buy sheets etc!

    • Main reason being the room size isn't too big, so would like to save space where possible.

You make a good point though, definitely food for thought.

  • Zzz for $231

  • Seems like I'm getting quite a few Zzz recommendations, will definitely look into it!

Had a brief look online and it seems they don't have a physical store. Am I able to try it anywhere at all before purchasing one?

    • They don't have. Only in Melbourne your able to check it out. Just take the plunge

      • I am in Melb, just moved here a few weeks ago. Where in Melb are they?

  • How about a futon on the floor?

    • Nah, I'd much rather invest in a proper mattress to not jeopardise my back further down the line.

      • Better for your back on the floor.

I bought a ZZZ last night on ebay with the 20% off promo, so $231 for a double. Delivery is estimated tomorrow so will let you know how it goes!

    • Definitely let me know!

      • Arrived today, so only 2 days delivery which was great. Have unfolded and it's currently on the bed. Looks fantastic, but they say can take up to 7 days to fully inflate so won't lie on it till then, but first impressions are very good.

  • Only the fact Ikea mattresses are not reversable says a lot about their quality.

    • I think that reflects their design, not necessarily their quality - sort of like how some tyres are only meant to be rolled in one direction. Depending on the bed, they have pocket springs and various soft linings.

They certainly seem a lot better than a bed that comes rolled up into a small packet and 'inflates' when opened up.

      • All the Ikea mattresses come rolled up into a small packet and inflate fully in 48 hours as a matter of fact. If you can’t turn a mattress it will last half of the time, also consider only their most expensive model has a metal edge inside for rigidity

  • Another happy zzz customer here
