Spotify Gift Card Not Working with Premium Family Membership

I had a store credit with Harvey Norman and nothing to buy there so I used it to purchased a $72 Spotify Gift Card.

When I got home and tried to apply the gift card to my Spotify account I got an error message, something about the gift card not being redeemable on my account.

I contacted Spotify support to be informed that Spotify gift card are only valid with Premium account but not with Premium Family accounts (wtf). Note this is not stated anywhere in the gift card. I asked for a refund or to apply the credit manually and was told they cannot refund and the only workaround would be to cancel my Premium Family membership, revert to Free, wait until the end of the period and then re-apply for a Spotify Premium (not family) account, use the credit of the gift card and then convert the Premium account to a Premium Family account. This also means I need to re-invite all family members to the Family account. You've got to be kidding, right??

This is ridiculous, online forums are full of complains but the folks at Spotify don't seem to care. Surely this is illegal in Australia as the gift card is not fit for purpose, right?

What's the best course of action to avoid other people having the same problem in the future? Would a complain to the ACCC work? Any other suggestions?

  • It's in the terms and conditions.

Quote — This card is redeemable for full price standalone Premium subscription months purchased directly from spotify.com only and cannot be redeemed for discounted or group subscriptions

There's no mention anywhere on the gift card of the above requirements. Only a generic mention that the use of the card is governed by Spotify T&Cs available online.

Surely consumer law wouldn't allow something that requires consumers to a) pick up the card b) read the fine print and c) go online and review the full T&Cs before actually buying the card, right? If the card is only valid for a Premium account but not for a Premium Family account this should be showing prominently on the card.

      • I, too, would think consumer law would not expect someone to have to go online to check T&Cs for an instore purchase. Would expect retailer would have to provide.

  • Sorry this is an old thread, did you ever get this sorted?

I currently have a family account and was looking at loading it up with discounted gift cards to save some $$$ but I won't if it does not work.

Does Spotify let you subscribe for Family account via iTunes Subscription, at least then I could use discounted itunes gift cards.
