Hi all. I’m helping out a friend who wants to set up a router VPN service for his home. He is connected to adsl currently and has a netgear d6300 which is a router / modem. To then add a VPN for his whole network he has an Asus Rt-Ac68u which is compatible with his VPN provider Expressvpn. He has got it set up so that the phone line goes into the netgear modem to give it internet, then from a lan outlet on the netgear to a lan outlet (not the WAN port) on the Asus which runs the VPN. The problem is that the VPN only works over wifi and for some strange reason all the Ethernet devices do not run through the VPN, even though they are plugged into the Asus router. He also has a NAS device which is plugged into the Asus router and is only seen by devices the network cable from the netgear modem is plugged into the lan port not the wan port. What am I doing wrong? Sorry for such a long post.

Turn off Wi-Fi on D6300 and put it into bridge (modem only) mode. One telephone cable from wall outlet to D6300. One Ethernet cable from any D6300 LAN port to AC68U WAN port. Apply power to both devices.
Then don't touch the D6300 anymore. It does not require any more configuration and you must not connect anything else to it. All other gadgets, wired and wireless, connect to the AC68U only. All configurations are done on the AC68U only.
The error is that the Netgear should have an IP of say 192.168.1.1 and the ASUS 192.168.2.1 then you MUST connect neatgear to ASUS WAN!
otherwise all routing will be done with Netgear which has no VPN
