New Smoke Alarm Beeping frequently

Hi Team,

I have recently moved into my new home. I have a smoke alarm at home but on our handover, It was not closed.

I closed the smoke alarm and it keept beeping non stop.

With few research, I found out that i need to change the battery for the first time use which i did and now the alarm beeps every 5 seconds.

I have tried resetting as well & pull out the battery and kept pressing the testing button so the battery power left in the circuit drains as well ( learnt from youtube) and then put the new battery but again it starts to beep every 5 seconds.

Someone please help me.

Thank you

  • You might find the smoke alarm is wired into the lighting circuit. The battery is a backup, in case the power goes out. So you might need to flick the power off to properly 'reset' it.

I'm only assuming it's hardwired and could be completely wrong.

    • Hi

WHen you say power, Does it mean the power in the main switch box?

      THank you

      • Yeah the main switch should do the trick.

As mentioned below, if the house is brand new, it's not your problem.

  • Must be driving you insane.

Probably not the solution but I had an issue with my alarm randomly going off (including at like 2am) and it turned out to be a dead bug and dust. A common problem. Maybe clean it out?

    • How can i clean the smoke alarm? There is nothing in there & can i pull out?

Do i get electricuted? Sorry never had to deal with all this.

      • There's a removeable cover on smoke alarms. They are easy to remove the plastic cover - same way you replace the battery. You've probably done that though.

        • Yes that yellow cover has already been removed.

          THanks

If the house is brand new - just list it as a defect and get it replaced.

Don't do anything yourself and do this ^

Builder didn't install correctly, their job to fix it.

Alternaively put out the fire in the kitchen then reset the alarm.

It's sorta like a pet fire. I've grown emotionally attached to it.
