      Why do they even bother?

and previously sold at $299 ???!! LMAO

It is because of the shock / water resistance rating that it has. It had a purpose, phone for kids that won't break the bank or break in general when dropped.

        • Well, priced at $299.

But go far enough back in time, and any phone is an incredible deal.

      • It’s for kids.

  • Yes, the one thing I need while I am doing the dishes, or in the hot tub, is a mobile phone

Depends how good the camera is

      • Hot Tub Time Machine 3??

      • Excellent vibration mode. The go anywhere phone.

  • 4GB? I'm guessing that means only 2.5GB or so is actually usable?

    • Up to 256gb expandable storage.

think of it as $99 for a waterproof phone, and if you have kids who you want to have a phone for basics or emergencies etc eg 8 year olds, it more than enough for them to sms, make voice calls, run whatsapp, etc.

we need to remember different people have different needs and some use less functionality on phone than we might ourselves.

i use a tablet more for mobile apps due to eye isight issues, so phone is for calls, sms, whatsapp and thetwhring my tablet when needed.

people with arthritis , phone size keypad might not be their favourite interface , so why spend up big on a phone.

    • Interesting that at no point in the description do they actually mention the word waterproof or even water resistant/ splashproof. They just say you don't have to worry about it getting wet.

Edit: GSMarena reckons it's - IP67 certified - dust/water resistant (up to 1m for 30 mins) although they also say its 8GB memory so could wrong.

      • probbly because its Big W and they're more used to describing womens undergarments

yeah this phone is maybe worth $50 at best and then you're still better off saving a bit more and buying a decent china phone

1gb 8Gb and quad core 1.3 is kind of shitty even back in 2015!

        • this one comes with Australian charger and Australian warranty, the $100 china droid doesn't. Some people just use these things as a basic phone, same way they did 8 years ago,
more cores or ram doesn't make phone calls or SMS faster.
My son's grandmother doesn't even use a browser on her smartphone and was shocked she had to pay $110 for a phone ( her nokia died )

not my choice of phone, but for some people it would tick the boxes.

patching, security, she doesn't do internet banking, use face book, or check email on her phone, does it from the PC at home.

        • so buy a feature phone instead? why waste $99 then?

People don't realize that often running a version of android that is so old is almost as bad as running copy of Windows XP that has been unpatched or 3 years.
    I'd avoid this device period.
People throw away better phones than this.

    • What does unpatched mean. Do I need to do anything to my xp. I only have Norton?

      • No more security updates.
Which means you are completely vulnerable to new attacks.

        • I had no idea, will read this later. I thought Norton protects me. Thanks

    • Well, that is pushing people to keep buying a new phone every time a new os comes out, when they would just be happy with a 5 year old phone. I can be sporting a Pentium 4 running one of the latest windows, yet can't do that with a phone.

Where can I find those people who throw away better phones than this :)

      • Agreed.
        I still use a Huawei U8180 from 2011. Does everything I need!

      • Best thing to do is not spend your money in the direction of a company that are tight arsed when it comes to updates (which unfortunately most are).
They should be obligated somehow to provide updates for at least 5 years.
It sucks to see otherwise good and handy devices left un-supported and un-patched.
My personal smart phone history has long gaps between updates, Galaxy S1 -> Galaxy S4 (which is still used by a family member) -> Nexus 6P (yep, 2 generations old now and no intention of updating to the now $1k+ nexus phones!).
Nothing wrong with wanting to stick with an old phone, i support you 100%.
Problem is that they often end up unsupported and un patched by the manufacturer.
Google is attempting to address this with changes to android coming that separate android itself further from the hardware and drivers of phones, thus allowing google more control over offering updates.
Until then the only economical solution is also a complicated and technical one - running custom firmware.
Often gives a great result (faster, leaner device with less bloatware and sometimes improved battery life), but not fall over easy to do.

        • This is throwaway society. if humans said no, we won't keep buying new phones every year or even less, companies would get the message really quick. But the society in general just sits there and goes on without as much s a fuss. Those who make phones, build, design, sell… they are all ordinary people, yet don't think about the impact of ever more waste they create. That tells me they don't think even about themselves, let alone about their children and what they are leaving them.

Sure, there are a few people who wouldn't want a new thing, but at the same time humans need to realise that the resources are finite and even if somehow humanity succeeded in going to other planets and even find planets with enough resources, how long before it is depleted too. But they want to have the cake and eat it too. Consuming more is good for the business and economy, but it destroys everything else as most of the things are not recyclable. Humanity is not showing responsibility which in turn will only end bad for them. It reminds me of a story in the Bible of the great flood. the guy was warning people to prepare for the flood, yet they continued having fun till the flood came and took them all. Well, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize what is going to happen with this society because their thirst for more is insatiable.

Custom firmware… that is my pet peeve. why do I have to resort to that instead of just being satisfied with the phone out of the box. I mean don't those people who design phones and build them also not use phones? Aren't they annoyed at bloatware they have on their phones? And this can be applied to any other industry. Sure it's great to have a new car, but what are those workers think at all when they just keep making "new" design cars is baffling. If you consume and you don't replace, there won't be anything left to consume any more.
