Singapore Airlines Vs Etihad for Economy?

Which one is better for economy long haul London <> Sydney? I think I like Singapore Airlines better because the flight attendants are godly-friendly and food and service is great (also with free cocktails during flight), also the stopover at Changi Airport is awesome. Airport has cinema, good food and you can get the $20 free voucher to spend there.

But at the same time, Singapore Airlines for this flight is running Boeing 777 and Etihad has Airbus A380, which I think is a better plane and it's really quiet. And Etihad is slightly cheaper.

And unrelated, but if anyone is travelling as a couple; is it really a good plan to pick seats near the back that are 3 abreast and you book the window and the aisle? Then most likely no one will pick to sit in the middle and even if they do, you can ask if they want to switch to the window or aisle so you still get to sit with your partner. Never tried this plan but I've heard success from others.

No question, the A380 is better than any 777. I'm doing a similar route myself next week, Melb to Europe on a Qatar A380. A point to note is transiting through Sg breaks the trip into 2 similar chunks, rather than the 15+7 hours on Etihad.

That being said Abu Dhabi is TERRIBLE! Changi any day!

8+14 is similar? It's pretty much a flip of the mideast stop option.

Yeah, looking forward to seeing if Doha is better than Abu Dhabi.

  • Having traveled on both, I would pick Singapore Airlines any day over Etihad. The service is so much better and Changi is one of my favorite destinations to take a break now whenever I am travelling.

  • Picking the window and aisle doesn't always work. My parents have done this and almost every time they end up with someone between them. A few times the person in the middle would not swap.

I've only flown with Singapore Airlines so can't compare with Etihad but I remember the service was great and Changi airport was very good.

  • If the costs are comparable, SG would be my pick for London - Sydney.

I've flown with both airlines and have found the combination of SG in the air, plus the transit through Changi, a much better experience all round.

Having said that, we did get a much cheaper flight that flew into Scotland (avoiding a further transit in Heathrow) with Etihad and that was of more value to us than the flight experience.

  • Singapore Airlines 777s are 3,3,3 seats across, instead of 3,4,3 like other airlines. So the singapore 777 is pretty roomy, and according to seatguru some 777 versions are moreso than the etihad a380 (19 inch seat width vs 17.5).

777 is a noisier aircraft but noise cancelling headphones are the go anyway.

    Would recommend Singapore.

  • I've been on Etihad A380 and honestly wasn't very impressed, Singapore airlines I have always been happy with. But they are both up there with the best so just take whatever is cheaper.
