Need HELP: Empty LCD TV BOX needed

Hi Guys,
Not sure if I should be posting it here. Apologies upfront.
I am going overseas in 2 weeks. I would like to take my 40inch Sony lcd with me as my baggage.
I threw away my original box that it came in with.

Went to Good guys, Dick Smith, Harvey Norman, Bing Lee. No one could help me with a 40/42 inch empty box.
Checked online and found one that costs like 150$.
So I am lost.
Help me out guys. Where can I get a free/cheap 40/42 inch TV box.
Any of the ozbargainers has one to spare?

  • have you checked that you airline will not class it as oversized baggage? Some airlines have length limits for baggage and your tv would be too big. check the airline website for baggage restrictions.
Re box, where are you located? There might be some turn up for Ozbargainers as Xmas presents.
From what I have seen of baggage handling I don't like your chance of having a working tv at the other end but how about "bubble wrap" it?

  • OMG - it won't get there without being broken. Watch any luggage handling from the window of your plane to confirm. My bag even came back with melted zips and burns once. Just don't - for the sake of your precious Sony.

    Sell here - buy there.

  • @scozbargain,
Thanks for your reply. I spoke to my airline and they advised dimension will not be a problem as long as its under 20KG. They have baggage dimension restriction's if flying to USA or CANADA.
But they will not take any responsibility of the fragile item.
I can pick up from any of the suburb Bankstown, Homebush, or Marsfield.
Please any of the ozbargainers can help, it will be highly appreciated.

    @sparkles,
one of my friend successfully pulled this off through Singapore airline. I know there is big risk that i will get the TV delivered overseas in two pieces. But how much can I expect from a year old BRAVIA™ LCD TVs - EX500?
Even new models costs less than a thousand. But I will still ask my friends if anyone wants to buy it.

  • No offence dude, but it won't make it. I've taken bikes on planes before (in bike boxes) and when they arrive the box is all mangled from being kicked/had heavy bags thrown against it. Even though you remove the pedals, some how the crank shaft pierces through the box, despite the padding etc i put in there. Its like they have people hired with bolts in socks, to beat bags as they come down the conveyor belt.

RE:getting a box. You're best bet (apart from here), is waiting till someone buys a tv at jb, then asking them if you can buy the box from them for $30? - say drive to their house that night and take it? im not sure? they might think it s a scam and tell you to bugger off.

    Otherwise http://www.packsend.com.au/packsendcms/foam_in_place_packing

    wait, i got it.!!!

Call up qantas and ask if they have any "bike boxes" available for $25 (you may have to pick this up yourself.
Pick one up, and stop at officeworks on the way home. Grab some bubble wrap and those foam pellets. Then go to bunnings and get some wood that doesnt easily bend (but is light weight).
    - remove the cords etc and dust
    - glad wrap the entire tv
    - bubble wrap. the entire tv
    - place two vertical "bars" of foam on the front edges of the tv. (tape in place)
    - tape the wood over the screen, so if it gets kicked, it can absorb it.
    - Perhaps bubble wrap some more.
    - put in box resting on some foam feet. (just to keep it off the ground)
    - line the rest of the box with foam pellets
    - seal up with tape, then glad wrap the entire box.

Dont bother using the professional services for glad wrapping - costs like $10, and for that you can buy 1km of glad wrap.

anyway, thats how i'd do it, but even then, no guarantees.

EDIT: http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/sporting-equipment/… from memory their $25, but check
EDIT2: which side of sydney are you located?

  • Go dumpster diving tonight outside JBHIFI, Goodguys, Bing Lee etc until you find a box

  • @Davo1111
Wow..thanks a lot. but after your bike story , I am a bit worried.
    I live in bankstown area.

  • I reckon you are dreaming if you think that a 40" LCD is going to survive baggage on an flight. Gosh, my Samsonite cklamshell bag got damaged….

  • +1

Do yourself a favour and save the hassle, heartache and worry about packaging transporting overseas….

IMHO just try and sell it and recoup some cash then buy one overseas =)

  • try and sell it on ozbargain, I'm sure a couple of people wouldn't mind buying it if it is at the right price.

  • I've checked in my bike in a retail box once and it came "unharmed" I guess its a matter of luck
