A HDMI cable and a keyboard and mouse combo?

    • but you need to keep laptop open though right?

I dont believe so. Probably just need to change the Power options - so when you close the lid the computer doesnt go to sleep

  • How are you connecting the dock? Thunderbolt or USB C
Also, are you going to use anything graphics intensive, as most dock will only use the Intel GPU to output video and not the discrete GPU.

    • just everyday use. no graphic stuff. ideally hdmi. my laptop doesnt have usbc

  • I use Toshiba DynaDock USB 3.0, not the best but serves the purpose.

A lot of used ones on eBay. I got 2 - one for my son and for my home-office.

    • Thanks I'll try that

  • I'd recommend just getting a DELL one. Is it a home office? It's a tax deduction if so…

    • I would but i have hp and dell laptop.
These seem to only work with dell

      • Then get a 3rd party one like targus and you can use it for both. You’ll get your monitor and internet connection via USB which can be a hit and miss.

  • I currently use my dell laptop as a portable desktop too - what I did is bought a USB C > DP cable (was only $30), you can also use hdmi cables etc but I didn’t have enough left in my monitor. Then all I did is connected a keyboard and mouse - go through the laptop settings and there should be an option to keep the laptop on while the lid is shut, and also you can duplicate the screen to get the desktop experience through your laptop.

    Hope this helps.

  • Well just humble hdmi cable ended up doing the trick.
