Hike at Mount Kosciuszko - Need Any Advice

Hi Ozbargainers,

Please provide me advice or direct me to somewhere with more information.

I am planning on doing a hiking trip on Mount Kosciuszko and planning to go late March/early April - I understand it is getting cooler and colder.

Can you guys provide any advice on your hiking experience? What to bring, anything to look out for etc.

We are also travelling from Sydney and I thought about getting accommodation in ACT but it's a 2-2.5 hour drive to the national park. Thinking it would be easier to get accommodation nearby - any recommendations on accommodation as well?

Thanks guys !

    • ? that was one of the first pages I looked at already.

I was wondering about accomodationg as well. Whether it's better to stay nearby or Canberra is sufficient enough.

And personal experiences from people with anything to look out for in particular considering I'm going in late March

  • Accommodation in Jindabyne or Thredbo.
Not really a hike up to the summit. More of a nice walk.
See the second link from @oscar.

  • I think it depends on which way you go. The track from thredbo is shorter and the one from charlotte's pass is longer. I've only done the track from charlotte's pass but I would recommend a snow jacket, although it wasn't very cold the winds made the snow jacket a must.

As for places to stay I think Jindabyne is a good place to stay at, although if you do the thredbo track you could stay at canberra it will be a tiring day though.

    • Yeah, torn between staying in Canberra or nearby. I think I'll take your advice and stay nearby. Might be too tired to drive after a long day of hiking.

What is your plan? Because if you are catching the chair lift up from Thredbo and then going from there, it is hardly more than a stroll in the park. Take a hat, sunscreen, bottle of water and comfy shoes, along with weather appropriate clothes and that's about it. If you plan on hiking from the bottom and doing the multi-day walks that is a bit different. But it really depends on what your plan is.

    • Thanks! What do you recommend? My friends and I are relatively fit and we've done hikes around the royal national park plenty of times.

I was hoping to explore the area as much as we can do in a whole day. So I guess catching the chair up and any other walks/tracks you recommend ?

If you want to do it in 1 day, your only real option is to take the chair lift up from thredbo and then walk to the summit from there. Whilst not difficult this will take the better part of the day as the chair lift opens at say 9am and the walk is say 3 hours or more so you're looking at a minimum 12pm to 1pm finish, throw in a lunch break after the walk in thredbo that is your day effectively.

        My recommendation would be something like this and this would be a fairly casual day if you fit it all in and want to do a bit more than just the walk main track;

        1. Find accommodation in either; Cooma, Jindabyne or Thredbo
        2. Wake up, have breakfast in Thredbo before 9am
        3. Jump on chair lift when it opens
        4. Do the walk plus return
        5. Have lunch in at the top of the Chairlift at the restaurant
        6. Then keep heading south for a drive on the great alpine way
        7. Stop at all the lookouts, camp sites and photo opportunities - some camp sites have creeks and rivers running through them. Example; the Murray river runs through the back of Tom Groggin Camping Area.
        8. Keep going till Khancoban
        9. Turn back and return to Jindabyne
        10. Alternatively continue straight to Gundagai and return to Sydney if at end of your trip
        • Great thanks, appreciate that

  • There's a camping site nearby where you can bring your own tent to pitch at powered or un-powered sites. They have shower and toilet facilities for you to use, but you will need to bring your own fire wood. http://www.kosipark.com.au/
The hike is more like a long walK. Nothing too strenuous.
2 litres of water is plenty when it is cold. Make sure to bring adequate food and warm enough clothing.

  • going from Charlotte Pass is a nice easy 9km each way. Wear sneakers or joggers with a bit of tread rather than hiking boots. ALWAYS take extra clothing, food and water. The weather can turn quickly and you may have to seek refuge in one of the rescue huts.

But you really should go in December and do this hike AFTER running 222km first…..
