  • Just booked with Phillipine Airlines last night for $490 return in August. Now sure who's better to fly with but they were direct flights as well.

Philippine Airlines has actually recently refitted most of their international fleet to try and get 5 star SkyTrax Classification (won't happen anytime soon IMHO). IIRC PAL's A330s service Melbourne and Sydney, which have Economy/Premium Economy offerings similar to that of other major legacy airlines also serving Asian routes. Please note that Brisbane-Darwin to Manila routes are serviced by the A320/A321 fleet.

I've experienced flying out of all AU destinations offered by PAL and flying in/out of Melbourne and Sydney with PAL is another world compared to Brisbane and Darwin, purely because of the different level of service offered by the bigger plane (lack of IFE, cramped AF, stingy AF ground crew weighing each person's bag everytime on both occasions I've flown out of Brisbane with PAL). I would never recommend to anyone taking PAL's Brisbane-Darwin flights (unless Business) since, even on discounted fares, you are paying way too much for Jetstar level quality. Also the layover in Darwin really is a killer. Better off actually flying Jetstar to either Sydney and taking Ceb Pac (will probs turn out significantly cheaper during peak); or taking any of the LCCs to Bali/Singapore/KL then connecting through to MNL or any major PH destination.

      • Leaving from Melbourne. Thanks for the info! We have a group of 12, so was one hell of a saving. When we started looking the prices were high 700s!

Awesome! That's good :) Their IFE offerings are still somewhat limited, especially compared to the likes of Singapore Airlines, but there is a good mix (mostly Hollywood). Is your group's final destination Manila, or connecting to another destination? I just wanted to ask since transfer time needed differs greatly…. I think, 4 hours minimum If xferring between terminal, at the least… but oddly, 2 hours is more than enough if in the same terminal. NAIA transfers, especially if you are transferring terminals, is a joke, but improving. At least now there is actually airside transfers between the terminals, but when I was last there, and had to xfer from T3 to T1, I waited for over an hour….. and had the unfortunate experience of sharing the bus with drunk Europeans in one end, and a Mainland Chinese tour group on the other :'(

        • @ClaudeElement: heading to Coron the following day and then Boracay. Spending a week in each. Have never been but wanted somewhere different. I hear good and bad things about both places though!
