Does China Southern Airlines Enforce "No Phone" Rule?

I read the other day that you're not allowed to use mobile phones on China Southern Airline. Does anyone know if they actually enforce this? As I was hoping to use my phone to watch videos during my trip to Japan as my laptop is dead and I have no tablets…

pfft… they don't even enforce people to sit down! Last time I flew them from Beijing to Shanghai, people were standing up and getting their luggage out while the plane was decending

    • Okay, sounds good. A bit worried about the China Southern flight, seems a bit wild west, or wild east I guess :P

Definitely wild south, as the name imply.

  • It's a rule, which includes phones in flight mode.

Cabin crew are generally trained to enforce the rules.
    However, they may not.

In short, maybe and good luck.

    • I know it's a rule, just wondering if it's actually enforced or not.

    • Wondering if its a bad English rule translation…..

"passengers and crews in the plane are not allowed to use portable electronics actively sending out radio signals, including mobile phones (mobile phones in flight mode included)".

Cool fair enough for actively transmitting devices, but A mobile phone in flight mode, doesn't actively send out radio signals. But still included in the ban!? Crazy.

Technically this wording would even exclude you using a tablet, as it has wifi/bluetooth (and a flight mode).

I'm wondering if that is meant to say "mobile phones in flight mode excluded". To be like every other airline in the world!

EDIT - But seeing other posts here…. It seems maybe not!?

All Chinese airlines have a no phone rule. They dont even allow flight mode. The attendant will stand beside you and request loudly that you will need to turn off the phone. Most people will comply out of embarrassment.

    • seriously? Thats crazy! How about tablets?

      • Tablets and laptops are ok.

        • But how?

          From this https://www.csair.com/en/tourguide/flight_service/passenger_…

"passengers and crews in the plane are not allowed to use portable electronics actively sending out radio signals, including mobile phones (mobile phones in flight mode included)".

Tablets are portable electronics and can actively sending out radio signals.

Very confused why they can be used but mobiles not.

        • @JimmyF: Most tablets don't have 3G/4G? Either way it's a stupid rule.

        • @Clear: yes no mobile radios but they all have wifi and bluetooth radios, which are 'sending radio signals' out.

        • @JimmyF: Indeed. That's why the rule is stupid. WiFi and Bluetooth are far more limited in range however.

@Clear: Limited, but both will be able to 'cover' an aircraft footprint though.

          Its just silly.

  • Last time I flew with them (earlier this year) a passenger near me had their phone on flight mode and was playing games on the phone. Each time the attendant walked by and noticed they (politely) asked the passenger to turn off the phone. About the third time the passenger did then actually turn it off.

  • flew with them couple months ago, and was asked to turn the phone off

  • they don't enforce

i was using my phone with the free wifi they offered on way back from china

It is amazing that rogue terrorists don't simply get out their Nokia 3310 and make a call instead of going through the hassle of trying to smuggle a bomb on board :)

    • Yeah was just wondering about that. Has there ever been an incident caused by a mobile phone? I know the one about not being allowed at servos was BS (I suspect they just didn't want people holding up the lines while they chatted on their fondle-slabs).

      • You can use phones with flight mode off no problem, its no risk to the plane.

If the terrorist throw the 3310 hard enough on to the floor, it might punch a hole through the plane.

  • They enforced it on my flight, watched us turn off the phone and put it away. But they did have inflight movies so wasn't the end of the world.

    Only if you are white.

Seriously. I got scolded the whole flight for playing on my phone… yet the whole time a guy behind me was using his tablet… what a joke.

P.S. probably not a racist thing at all… but it makes me feel better believing that hahaha. MMMMMmmmm, feels good being a victim!

  • They do. All Chinese airlines enforce a no phone rule even if in flight mode. Will request you turn it off and crew will stand there until you do so.
You can however use an ipad or tablet after take off.

    • Can I make them stand the whole trip by stubbornly not turning OFF my phone? It's much easier than pressing the button and wait for them to bring me something.

  • Yep, they will ask you to turn off your phone. It is silly because I even showed the lady my phone was in flight mode. She said no phones allowed still.

If you want to use their wifi in peace, bring a tablet or laptop.

  • I have experienced it not being enforced Syd - Guangzhou, and then being enforced Guangzhou - Beijing, and same in the reverse direction. Not sure if international flight crew are given different training to domestic or what. Security at Guangzhou also VERY interested in powerbanks, more than I have experienced anywhere else. They let it through, but consulted a list first and actually read the brand and capacity and stuff.

  • Ah man, still no idea really. Guess I'll try my luck. If not it's crappy in-flight movie for me then…

    • I have been flying with them a few times.

      90% yes.
      5% - may be
      5% - no.
