Pre-Owned "New 2DS Xl" Bought off eBay Has Fluro Green Dead Pixel, Seller Offering Partial Refund. What Amount Is Fair

I recently bought a used "new 2ds xl" off ebay (retails $199) for $145 and $15 shipping from a seller, the pics showed it in pretty good condition and boxed and everything, i got it today but after opening it up i've noticed theres a fluro green dead pixel on the top screen, other than that the device is mint condition. I've contacted the seller and they offered a partial refund and asked me what amount i think is fair. Obviously if it was seen in the listing the bidding would have been lower but i'm not sure how much worse. I dont want to have to pay for shipping to return it so what do you guys thing would be a fair amount off the price.

TLDR: dead pixel on new 2ds xl, how much partial refund is fair

Was it just off a normal person or a store?

    • Just a normal person - 200 rep with no negatives, they said in the reply that it didn't have any when they last played it, i dunno the truth behind that but it was the first thing i noticed but i guess i was looking over it.

See the reason I asked is because it wasn't from a store so it's sorta a case of buyer beware. No different to buying off Gumtree. I only ever use ebay for store purchases and brand new purchases.

new new 2ds xl off ebay (retails $199) for $145

This doesn’t sound like this item was brand new, but rather secondhand.

    • sorry i meant pre-owned like in the title, Nintendo stupid naming scheme is getting to me

      • +1

You can get a full refund if the item is significantly not as described (snad). Open a return and follow the instructions.

        • Does that cover return postage? the only thing i can find is i pay postage to return it, which is going to be like 10 bucks which i'd rather not have to pay if i can bargain the seller down to a fair price.

@lumifox: seller should pay for for it

        • +2

A single dead pixel is annoying, but I'm not sure if it can be classed as "significantly not as described".

Even LCD manufacturers have differing policies on the number of dead pixels there must be to qualify for a replacement.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to try though.

Did you pay with PayPal? Possible free return shipping and a full refund??

    • Paid entirely with paypal balance. Is that a thing?, i always thought shipping was always paid by the buyer and paypal and ebay want nothing to do with you after the sale is over.

      • Not true. Change of mind returns depend on specific seller's return policy but if the product is defective, the seller is responsible for return shipping.

        • Wow, you're right, the seller told me i'd have to pay for shipping if i wanted to return it, shifty

        • I'm thinking of this. Not sure if eligible though

        • @lumifox:
They have to reimburse you for shipping because it’s not as described.

If you could be bothered, you could try loading the 3DS up and going to the website
    http://www.jscreenfix.com/

Pixel sounds stuck since it's green, dead pixels are usually black. This fixed two of my stuck pixels, website says run 10 minutes but I left it an hour like an absolute madman.

If you make a return through ebay then the seller has to pay for it, if through PayPal then the buyer does, unless you sign up to the free return postage deal in which case PayPal does.

It is up to you to decide if you are happy with the pixel if it means getting a discount or if you'd rather return it. We can't make that decision for you :-p

    • As an ozbargainer i'd be happy with a decent discount, but no ones even answered the question yet lol, i'll probably just say like $50 bucks and if he says no just refund it

      • We don't know how you value that so it is up to you.

    800 x 420 pixels (336,000) per $160.
    Remove one pixel.
    335,999 / 336,000 x 160 = $159.99
    Refund 1 cent.

…or maybe you should go off the amount of space the fluoro-green bleeds?

i feel like this joke would be funnier if we were talking about the android pixel

  • unless it's a special edition version i would ask for a bigger refund otherwise go thru ebay to get a refund.
you're going to have trouble when it your turn to sell the unit.

$160 for a used one and $199 for a brand new one.
Is it really saving that little off the price of a new one? During one of the regular eBay sales, that difference would be even smaller or maybe even the same price.

  • Why don't you get Nintendo to fix it under warranty?

    • I'm pretty sure I read something about people trying to return their Switch with dead pixels and Nintendo considered it "normal" and wouldn't repair under warranty.

A quick Google search lead me to this thread:
    https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/997614-nintendo-3ds/749…

    Key messages

Based on several surveys and internet information, about 6/10 N3DSs have stuck pixels. You have roughly a 40% chance of having a perfect screen.

It's pretty bad. I always tell this, but…I've owned multiple 3DS systems of just about every iteration, and out of possibly 30+ systems, only about 3 of them had no green stuck pixels.

Based on this I would say this is not an uncommon occurrence on a 3DS and that the seller probably doesn't owe you anything. To further this here's Nintendos official stance on Switch dead/stuck pixels:

Switch owners complaining of distracting dead or stuck pixels, or light or dark patches on the screens of their brand new consoles, are being told by Nintendo that they are “normal” and are not defects.

In a support document entitled “There are black or bright dots on the Nintendo Switch screen that do not go away, or there are dark or light patches on the screen” Nintendo said: “Small numbers of stuck or dead pixels are a characteristic of LCD screens. These are normal and should not be considered a defect.”

If I was the seller I might take pity on you and offer a $5-10 refund for it but otherwise it seems pretty normal to have a stuck pixel on Nintendo hardware and if it's only 1 pixel I wouldn't worry about it as both my TV and my computer screen also have a single stuck pixel which is below the threshold for any sort of warranty exchange (normally they want at least 5), it's just a thing that happens with LCD technology and not a defect as such.

    • That's more of a statement on Nintendo shitty quality control trying to normalize defects rather than step up their game, people should be mad, any other company people would be mad. Plus their screens are tiny compared to a monitor or tv, so a stuck/dead pixel is more ovbious

      • The PSP also had a lot of stuck pixel reports (one of my three has about 3 pixels stuck) and you see how bad peoples screens were on the Pixel 2 XL from Google. I have a 3DS XL (not "new 3ds") and it has 1 stuck pixel but it's in a corner so doesn't bother me. I don't think it's as uncommon as you are trying to make out.
