I need to replace my Current ANZ Qantas FF Black card because the annual fee is due soon. I had the ANZ Black card the year before, so that one is off the table as well.
I know that no other cards on the market can come close to these ANZ cards in terms of value for money - but I need something for now.
The 2 options right now are:
AMEX Explorer
Velocity High Flyer Visa
I'm going to be going to the US later this year - but probably paying cash for the flights because the points redemptions are a bit crazy (200k velocity points for a return flight that costs $1,100).
I am leaning towards the AMEX Explorer because -
Higher points earning rate
It won't be very hard to spend the $400 credit (The locations I am heading seem to be represented on AMEX Travel)
Flexibility on using the points (The sign up bonus is worth 75K Velocity, but I can use the points for different hotel chain rewards as well).
Any other recommendations?
I like the flexibility of Amex points, so would go with the Explorer if eligible. Can probably hang on to the points until there is a transfer bonus on as well.
Just a note on the ANZ cards - if it has been more than 12 months since you had the FF (ie. not the Qantas FF one) you should be eligible to apply for that again.
Also:
200k is for business class, which would be a great use of the points imo if you can actually find availability - notoriously difficult for that route.
