Best 4K monitor for visual design? (Around $1k and Mac compatible)

Hey fellow OzB’ers,

I’m on the hunt for a great 4K monitor that will primarily be used for visual design, not gaming, I have a retina 2017 MacBook Pro that will likely go into clamshell mode but I’d love to get to pick out and and send the invoice to to my boss so I can get cracking ASAP. I’ve been Googling but all the recommendatioms are from US sites. Any advice would be appreciate :)

Thanks so much,

Jules.

  • Dell UP2718Q

    Best one probably out now

    Or lg ultrafine 5k

    • I’m silly. Should have mentioned around $1k budget and Mac compatible.

      • Dell UP2718Q is $700 with the current eBay sale.
LG Ultrafine 5K can be bought for $1121 if you don't mind refurbished.
Both are around $1000 and Mac compatible.
You'd have to get a USB-C to HDMI adapter for the Dell monitor, it's $30 on Amazon.

So the recommended options are perfectly suitable.

        • Missed this! Picked up the U2718P but thanks for the heads up on USB-C to HDMI 4K @
60hz. Still on the hunt for the cheapest around.

        • There is no HDMI end on the cords provided. Far out!

    • I need to be an ozballer

  • Dell U2718P, good price, great color reproduction and accuracy, eachmonitor comes factory calibrated, cant go wrong with it. And yes it is compatible.

    • I picked this up this afternoon. Wasn’t smart enough to pick up thr USB-C to HDMI adapter with it!

      • I just got this one a month ago and I'm very happy with it, hope you will too!

      • By the way I'm not sure if usb-c to HDMI is the right option as it's possible that the HDMI port does not support 4k@60Hz. For best compatibility please get a usb-c to DisplayPort cable!

      • Edited out. Repeated comment as above.

        • Recommendation? Belkin USB-C to HDMI says it supports 4K@60Hz…

        • @julesio: it's not just about the cable itself, you'll have to check if the HDMI port on the monitor supports 60Hz at 4K.

Anyway I've checked for you, the U2718P does have HDMI 2.0 which supports 60Hz@4k so don't worry about it. Just get whichever cable that's the cheapest, whether usb-c to HDMI or DisplayPort!

        • @xiabonan:Thanks mate. I really appreciate you looking into that.

I just charged the Belkin to work for quality assurance reasons. If it were just for me I would go cheap, but while we’re bootstrapping everywhere else this is probably the only place I can’t risk having the cheaper cord short out.

        • @xiabonan: It won’t connect with HDMI! It didn’t come with that cord!

        • @julesio: mate did you get the cable or the adapter? You need the actual cable itself too!

        • @xiabonan: Adapter. I don’t know how to make this work .

        • @julesio: one is display port and one is freakin’ USB. I am lost.

        • @julesio: Just added HDMI cable from Apple TV. I am an idiot. Thank you!

        • @julesio: so have you gotten it to work?

        • +1

          @xiabonan: Like a G6. Thank you!

        • @julesio: no worries mate!
