ALDI Mobile - Issues with VPN?

Hi folks.

I've been using a VPN (PIA) for years - I prefer strangers in a far away land knowing what I'm doing rather than daddy here - over Telstra with no issues. Lately I'm finding that my Moto G5's speed over the VPN is grinding to snail's pace when I'm on Telstra with Aldi Mobile. Switching severs doesn't help, and they work well on my other devices. I've only had Aldi for a few months now and it felt OK for a while but the last week or two it's been quite annoying. As soon as I'm on a Wifi network, or bypass the VPN it comes good. Googling "Aldi VPN" shows up nothing.

Anyone else having any similar issue with Aldi Mobile?

When you say "it comes good" on 4G with the VPN off, how accurately have you measured this compared with Telstra?
Is there the same upload speed, download speed and ping both locally and internationally as Telstra had?
PIA have a Sydney endpoint from memory (PIA sucks balls so I switched to torguard), do you get better speeds on that endpoint?*
ie, try to VPN to Sydney and then hit up whirlpool.net.au or ozbargain.com.au (a local site).

*I'm thinking they might have different international routing compared with telstra.

    • Tried Sydney and all over the world - same problem. Was never a problem while I was with Telstra until a few months ago. Now I'm getting uploads and downloads in the order of hundreds of bytes per second.

Try switch from UDP to TCP on the VPN app. On rare occasions UDP can be less reliable that TCP VPN connections as UDP does not guarantee the delivery of packets.

Well that seems to work - I'm on right now as I write this. Hopefully it continues. Thank you!

      • No worries, it's a Telstra thing :)
